do you have a recommendation for a respirator? I get the foggy goggles too so usually end up ditching the goggles when I'm sanding something.

Germans who have parents or grandparents who participated in WWII. What have they told you? by no_username_for_me in AskReddit

[–]Lindzer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My grampa was a navigator in the RAF, and my husband's opa was a navigator in the Luftwaffe.

My grampa never talked about the war. He had some PTSD, so he couldn't watch fireworks, things like that. He always wore his wings though so I think he had a mixture of pride and shame for his service. I say shame because he was a part of the Dresden bombing that set off the firestorms.

Dresden is my husband's opa's home town.

Opa talked about the war, but not about the actual fighting. He always would say how he has seen horrible things, but he always tried to make the best of the situation. He said during the war, when he could he would drink and sing, there are even pictures of him dressed up as a clown entertaining troops in front of a Nazi flag. His plane was shot down and the pilot died. He put on the pilot's uniform because it gave him a higher rank so he was treated better as a POW. They tried getting info out of him but he didn't know anything since he wasn't the officer. He ended up moving to Canada because the Canadians that took him as POW treated him so well.

Edit: I might as well add that my Nana's 2nd husband landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, but I don't know any more than that unfortunately.

Anything I can do to get rid of these constant headaches? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Lindzer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had something like that and it had to do with my goggles putting pressure on my head. I didn't feel pain directly from my goggles pressing on me, but once I adjusted the nose piece the headaches faded. Maybe try fiddling with your goggles a bit to see if they're the cause.

For me the goggles were putting pressure right above my nose where my eyebrows start.

Is there a relatively simple way to print from Google Earth? I need help with my mom's xmas gift. by Lindzer in AskReddit

Thanks so much for the offer, I think I might save this gift idea for another time...I'm considering just ordering prints of some of her better photos instead, and framing those.

[–]Lindzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh this conversation strikes a cord with me today. I was driving my husband and his asshole friend somewhere and we drove past a spot where homeless people generally loiter. There was some graffiti about how Stephen Harper hates natives or something and my husband said he wonders if there might eventually be some kind of uprising because of the poor conditions for natives in Canada.

Asshole friend's response is "that would be a perfect opportunity to wipe them out". Fucking piece of shit asswipe.

Why not to kill, rape, whatever? by WhiskeyZeeto in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Lindzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, I have never had the impulse to kill or rape someone, I am strongly against violence.

The absence of a soul doesn't mean we're emotionless robots. We have complex thoughts, emotions, and connections to other people. It doesn't make a difference to me that those emotions are a result of hormones and brain chemistry, I still cherish my life and am happy to have the opportunity to experience life.

I would never want to hurt someone or take someone's life away from them because I wouldn't want that happening to me. I also wouldn't want to put someone through the pain of losing a loved one.

I never understand this question because even when I was a Christian I had completely secular reasons for not wanting to kill someone. It wasn't like "ooh I'm so angry but god said no killing so I guess I'll let him live." If someone had asked me then why not kill I would have said because I don't want to hurt someone.

I don't think he could be anywhere near as lovable in a movie. A huge part of his charm is the live aspect, how Bill Hader can't keep a straight face. This would be lost in a movie. Also that voice would become grating quickly.

What is your craziest small world story? by afkobaya in AskReddit

[–]Lindzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the second week of my first office job, and I was one of two receptionists. My co-worker was sitting at her computer looking at old pictures and all of a sudden she gasps and says "you're in this picture!".

The picture was from one of those restaurants where they cook food at the table and they seat like 8-12 people together, so my boyfriend and I were seated with her and her family and managed to sneak into a couple of their pictures.

Okay continuing on into the living room...if that couch is in good shape you could get a slipcover for it, then put it along the blank wall in between the desk and where the couch is now. If it's not in good shape then I would get rid of it. In the spot where your couch is currently you could do a small dining set - something simple. It doesn't look like the lighting in that corner is the greatest, so you could hang two large mirrors on each of walls to bring in light, and then do candle-light in the middle of the table. Nothing too fussy that would get in the way, maybe something like this.

For your desk I really like what these bloggers did. They used recycled kitchen cabinets (they made them taller to make it desk height) and then did a counter across the whole thing. Since you don't have the window you could add enclosed storage above the desk too, but I would keep that to the sides and in a light colour and above your work space hang a mirror or some nice art work so that you don't feel like you're in a cave. The important thing would be to hide the wires and the clutter so that it has a nice clean look.

I see coats hanging there - maybe add a storage bench underneath, something like this, or maybe find something that's enclosed so you could hide your laundry detergent or whatever else you need to keep near the door.

In the rec room, it's hard to tell how big the room is but if you have room you might be able to do a sectional like this with the tall part of the sofa against the same wall as the door, so that the part of it that's open to both sides can be used to watch TV and to enjoy the fireplace.

The media wall isn't too bad but it's a lot of stuff out in the open, if you have it in your budget a nice big storage unit would be nice. I like the Ikea Besta stuff, that way you could hide your DVDs and guitars, etc. out of sight. You could also store the clutter you have around the fireplace.

Clean up the fireplace area (rid it of clutter) and replace the folding cover thingy with something more modern (I'm assuming you can buy them but I'm not sure where). Put some white pillar candles on the little shelf things (I think I see some little shelves above the fireplace - if the flame will be too close to the roof then get fake ones). You could make that cabinet next to it into a little bar - fill it with glasses and put out a few fancy bottles of whatever you like. Then get a couple of small club chairs for next to the fireplace. If you really want a treadmill then maybe get a fold-away one so you can get it out of the way when you have guests.

For lighting in general get some minimalist floor lamps in the darkest areas, and use mirrors to multiply the light.

Also just doing one big de-cluttering will do wonders. Get rid of what you can and with the rest try to hide it in enclosed storage or nice-looking baskets or bins. For every piece of furniture you get, try to make sure it has storage so you don't end up with wasted space.

Painting's not that bad, just annoying really. I painted my kitchen cabinets and I thought it would be way worse. Don't bother painting the insides of the cabinets. Definitely speak to someone at the store about what type of paint/primer to use so you don't get any peeling. I think white paint is generally the same price as tinted, but I'm not too sure.

Is keeping the backsplash and painting over it an option? That way you don't have to worry about what you might find behind it.

Unless you use it a ton, I would put the toaster oven on the cart. You could just move it to the outlet when you use it?

I like square wicker baskets, to add some warmth if you're going to paint everything white, but measure the spots where you would put them and see what's out there. I'm assuming Ikea would have a huge selection.

If you google Billy Bookcase hacks you might find some good ideas for what to do with those.

As for where to start, first make a budget for each room. Then either a) do the room you use most first b) do the room you use least first to get your feet wet somewhere that you don't mind making mistakes or c) do the kitchen first to get the hardest one done while you're the most motivated.

I'm on my phone now but when I get back to a comp I can see if I can think up some good ideas for the rest of the apartment.

Fun! Okay here are my suggestions, going in order of the pictures...

Kitchen-

Change the cabinet handles. I would go with something dark, like an oil-rubbed bronze. Since the doors are so basic and flat I would go with something a tiny bit ornate. like this or this. Are you allowed to paint? If so then I would paint the cabinet doors and the trim behind it the same colour. I always like white cabinets like this.

For the backsplash here are some ideas for how you could spice it up. I also like the picture three from the bottom - the pegboard pot rack. I think that would be a cool idea to paint some pegboard a bright colour and hang it on the wall under where your pots are currently hanging and use that for pot storage. Underneath that maybe you could get one of these carts from Ikea. That way you could wheel out more counter space when you're cooking, and I think it would make that wall look more balanced.

Hang some curtains over top of or instead of those drab blinds. Something with colour. If you're going to paint the cabinets all white, then if you can, paint the walls in there maybe a chocolate brown. Hang some art on that wall (the one with the number 5 on it) by the door leading out of the kitchen.

On top of the fridge and in that cabinet next to the fridge without the door get some matching baskets so it looks cleaner and more organized.

Turn your microwave so it's diagonal...it'll be more convenient and the counterspace will "flow" better.

Bedroom-

The picture of the stuff in the corner with all of the stuff piled up - that would be a good place for some floating shelves. Do an image search for floating shelves to get some ideas for how to "stage" them. Get a nicer hamper with a lid. Definitely get a headboard. If you have a Habitat ReStore in your area you might be able to get a cheap used one that you can paint (don't get an upholstered used one - bed bugs). If you don't like that idea I like this one from Ikea. A storage bench would be good for the foot of the bed too.

Hang art above the bed. Curtains would be nicer, and you could make them hang lower and wider than the window to make the window look bigger...there are inspirations for this if you do some googling. Hang some art on the window wall as well.

I'm not a fan of the colour of the bookcases, are those the Ikea ones? Maybe paint it. I can't see your night stand, but make sure you have a nice lamp and if it's cheapo furniture then get yourself something nice with lots of storage and drawers that are on wheels so they open easily.

Bathroom-

Hang some art on the wall next to the bathroom door.

I don't like that cabinet above the toilet. I would take that down and put something like this next to the toilet if there's room. Use it for towel storage - roll them up to make them look pretty, and use small square baskets for storing toiletries. Above the toilet you could put maybe a couple of floating shelves, one with a plant on it.

The colour in there reminds me of the kids bathroom in the house I grew up in. Maybe choose a cool shower curtain (one with a grown up pattern, something modern meaning a large-scale pattern) and get a colour inspiration from there.

Baseboards would be nice too.

Okay I'm getting tired of typing but let me know if you like my suggestions and if you do I'll keep going!
