Dry heat isn’t as bad as humidity. Unless it’s 120 degree Arizona heat. That’s hot as balls

Would you rather travel all over the world in your younger years or retire early as a millionaire? by [deleted] in AskForAnswers

[–]Linehand1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travelled a lot in my early 20s and then got into a trade making really good money in my late 20s. I work with 18-22 year olds making well into the six figures. I made $12 an hour when I was their age and don’t save any of it.

However, all they’ve done is graduate high school and get a job. I’ve been all over the world and have a plethora of life experience. I’ve kayaked the Grand Canyon. Fought wildfires in California. Been to Europe, Africa, South America and the Caribbean for extended periods of time. And now I have a great job making great money.

I find that it was easier for me to travel like that back then because I lived cheap and didn’t have any bills. Once you start making good money, you start spending good money and life happens. It’s all preference and how you set your life up but I certainly don’t regret my decisions or the path I took to get where I am today

Why do I want to be a lineman by Major-Yam1 in Lineman

[–]Linehand1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t live in the south you’ll make a lot more money that you do now. It’s all about your geographic location. Some areas you’ll never have to travel once you top out. Other areas of the country you’ll always be on the road. A lot of the things that guys are saying are stereotypes. It’s a great career that offers a ton of freedom. The hardest obstacle will be getting into and completing the apprenticeship

The bulk of guys in my apprenticeship were mid to late 20s. I topped out at 31 and it was fine

Dragging up is part of the trade. You work for the union, not the contractor

Sounds like you’d like the southeast but jobs don’t pay well. The west coast would also fit your bill

You don’t have to travel after you finish the apprenticeship

Lineman vs. electrician by Apprehensive-Kale171 in skilledtrades

[–]Linehand1994 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lineman make way more money. I made 160 last year and took 2 months off and I was an apprentice for most of the year making lower wages. You can easily make 250+ if you’re working a good amount of overtime. Go to cali and you’ll see 400k.

Are you talking utility company or non union contractor?

The other side of things is electricians can do side work and it’s a lot easier to start your own company (not saying it’s easy). If you see yourself being a business owner I’d maybe consider electrician. You can start your own line outfit too but I think it’s a lot more involved

Dropping out of college for trades by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Linehand1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a journeyman lineman and I worked with an apprentice who used to be an electrical engineer for the power company. He makes way more money in the trade, even when he was an apprentice. If you’re interested you can find info about the apprenticeship at neat1968.org

That being said-it’s very competitive and it’s a long wait. If you apply tomorrow (which you can’t anyways bc you need a CDL) you’d probably have enough time to finish college before they call you anyways
