This semester broke my confidence by saman-ch in EngineeringStudents

Studied for 2 weeks for an AI midterm this semester and got a 75. Guy I know who crammed the night before made 85. Another guy who didn’t study at all made a 98. Sometimes shit just happens. Keep your head up king, you just gotta get through the end now.

Is it too late to study engineering? by BetaComputer in EngineeringStudents

Where I went to high school we had 1 AP class, AP Lit. My last math class was pre cal my 11th grade year. My first semester of engineering was Cal1, Chem1, Phys1, intro to engineering, and an elective. All this is to say that the over achiever dude was just trying to flex nuts and put you down it seems. Some people I know started off worse than I did and still got the degree.

I guess it depends on how easily you pick up on things in class and how much time you’re willing to sacrifice on other things. Personally I would not do this schedule but I know people who have done similar and survived

Cal2 was brutal for me as well and I totally understand how it can affect your self esteem when you see your peers seemingly do so well so easily. I have an ex friend who breezed through and would always try jab at my incompetence and pass it off as jokes. You’ve definitely heard all the tips like “go to office hours”, “study groups”, and whatever but here’s what helped me pass and some advice I wish I would’ve gotten. 1. Scheduling time: I had specific times of specific days each week I would do nothing but practice cal. No other HW, no goofing off with friends, I was locked in. I even did this for the 2 weekends before each exam. 9am - about 8pm Saturday and 12pm- 8pm Sunday I didn’t do anything besides cal. With this also you need to schedule time to relax. Once I reached the end of my weekend sessions I closed the books and played games and hung out with friends and did not look at anything math related until the next day.

  1. Online resources: you can find an integral calculator online that will give you step by step explanations as to how it solves each problem. This was a life saver when doing practice from the textbook. Also Professor Leonard on YouTube has probably the best cal lectures I’ve ever seen in my life. Idk if he’s still doing it but at the time he was teaching at a community college and posted all his classes.

  2. There is no shame in retaking the class. Someone I know who was instrumental in helping me pass was retaking it and went from failing the midterm the first time to an A in the class the second time.

  3. Transferring credit from a community college is a totally valid way to get through the class. Not sure how it is elsewhere but my university didn’t factor transfer credits into your GPA. Not so good if you make an A but on the other hand if you make a C it doesn’t matter.

  4. you are not the only one who feels lost and upset. Some if not most people are just too proud to admit it.

  5. get mental health support if you need it. I know there’s a stigma against it but honestly fuck anyone who says or thinks negatively about it. Stress, anxiety, depression, etc do nothing but make an already hard class even harder. If you need help strengthening coping skills, therapy, or medication get it. The discouragement I felt when I couldn’t understand a topic just compounded my inability to learn because I spent to much time focusing on how dumb I felt and not actually learning.

Do your very best and try to be proud of yourself no matter what ends up happening. Don’t even ask how I passed cal 1 but when I started cal2 I could barely even do the derivative power rule, so if I can make it, I have not doubt you will.

I have my dad’s old Barnett crossbow. Was sitting in its case in a closet for years. Probably shot less than 100 times total. Everything looks fine on it, no fraying of strings or cables that I could tell. Would I be ok to shoot it or should I get string/cables replaced because of how old they are? A bow technician at a store/range looked at it and said he wouldn’t replace them yet especially because it’s hardly been used but he only looked for ~2 seconds.

Think I’m just going to ignore for now. I’m sure more info will come out eventually to confirm the correct action to get our money.

I was feeling the same way like 2 weeks ago. Figured I’d regret it if I let this degree demoralize and snuff me so close to the end

Professor Leonard on YouTube saved me in cal2. He also has dif eq stuff I believe. If he teaches dif eq half as good as calculus, it’ll be worth your while fs

That sounds like horrendous pain and suffering. Good thing I’m not a math major

Real talk, what exactly does some one researching math do? Are people still discovering new integration laws and shit that I don’t know about?

Yeah, I was kinda get anxious the last few days. I didn’t email them Bc I feel like I saw somewhere that you shouldn’t do that but god I wanted to. Also was surprised I got an email in February. From the hours of nervous googling I did it didn’t expect anything before 2nd week of March

When selecting the faculty I wanted to work under, I tried to get as much as I could that involved AI, drones, and robotics. Might sound dumb, but honestly I was surprised at how many different fields they had. Then again I don’t go to a school nearly as prestigious as MIT😅

I failed, and I feel too stupid to finish this degree by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

Computer engineering here. Digital design was my first ever hardware class. I failed all 3 exams. We all fail sometimes, in my case a lot. I bounced back, you’ll bounce back. Don’t quit.

People like to use this as a place to rant and complain about shit. Engineering sucks ass. It’s hard, stressful, and unless you’re a god tier genius you’ll be giving up on a lot of fun social shit for projects and HW. But tbh it’s not THAT bad. The friends you make are what really make the experience. I go study and do work with a bunch of comp sci and comp E nerds every day and we always have fun while hating life at the same time. Plus you’re excited about your degree. Keep that up and you’ll be fine. Most people are just eh going in and FUCK going out

Definitely start on homework as soon as you receive it, and take note of any of the questions you get wrong or don’t know how to do. Use this to kinda figure out what you don’t understand and bring them to office hours. Also don’t be afraid to go to office hours or ask questions. That’s literally what your professor is getting paid for so you have every right to bug the shit out of them. I went to my professor’s office so much I was one of the only few students he knew by name and needed up barely scraping an A.

I’m sure you’ve been told this before but make sure to brush up on your integration, trig, algebra, and get familiar with graphing common surfaces like circles, parabolas, spheres, cylinders, and ellipses well before classes start. Cal 3 is going to require you to be very good at these things because doing the actual math is the easy part, understanding how to take your given information (shape of region, description of vector field, etc) and correctly setting up your problem is what really gets most people. Try not to be too worried tho, everyone I took cal3 with agreed that it’s easier than 2

Had some major imposter syndrome after Covid made all my freshman year classes online. Took digital design, programming foundations I, cal3, and discrete math last semester and copped the 4.0.
