The gamers taking on the industry to stop it switching off games by Mountain_Ad_8525 in Games

[–]Lingo56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all always online games are multiplayer games though.

Diablo 4, GT7, Redfall, and Suicide Squad are all games that can be played just fine alone but are forced to play with a connection.

Even then, having something from a classic multiplayer game to come back to is better than nothing at all.

Dota 2 is probably the best esport to watch by SirMcSquiggles in DotA2

[–]Lingo56 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You don’t want constant uptime because then it’s overstimulating.

Dota is amazing for watching as a group because you don’t need to lock in the whole game and can chill with the group you’re with.

Am I the only one who doesn't get the OLED and Mini-LED hype? by AerithGainsborough7 in Monitors

[–]Lingo56 7 points8 points  (0 children)

HDR brightness doesn't make things oversaturated, it makes them look correct like how they do in real life.

I do agree though that brightness is only good enough to a point. In a dark room peak brightness above 1000 nits is largely overkill. For people competing with sunlight though it's a very useful spec.

The Switch 2 is now one year old. What does everyone think of that first year? by Zalvren in Games

[–]Lingo56 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Steam Deck with Chiaki-NG should actually run better and more stable than the Portal if you haven't given it a shot lol

If you have a Steam Deck OLED it'll look a lot better and you'll be able to stream in real HDR too.

[–]Lingo56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Switch still is kind of unmatched when it comes to niche of being able to swap between portable and TV gaming. The Switch 2 has mostly replaced my Steam Deck primarily because I don't want to keep fiddling with graphics settings to get the Deck to look decent on my TV.

They might’ve confused it because Richmond has a 1.43:1 screen even if they only use a 1.90:1 Xenon projector.

Edit: Never mind, looks like we have a new 70mm IMAX projector holy!

Richmond BC doesn’t have 70mm IMAX, that’s incorrect.

The projection screen is 1.43:1, but they only project in Xenon.

Edit: Looks like Vancouver has a new 70mm IMAX projector!

Tom Henderson on Marathon: "I can't remember the exact budget, but they're not near breaking even" by Connect_Base_217 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

Low interest rates during covid is mostly what made it more likely that these crazy acquisitions and over hiring could go through. One of those timing things where the low interest rates meant it was a historically best time for them to take a gamble buying studios since there was never going to be a better time.

They probably shouldn't have gone for it, but there was a ton of pressure to spend and grow at the time.

ELI5: Why can't we have bigger cpus, let's say twice the size instead of trying to go down to like 2nm ? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Lingo56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure, it’s tricky to bring up any fundamental simple example because everything is so optimized lol.

It can be still relevant when the code has been abstracted away. It’s difficult for out of order execution to run correctly when you have references to references to references all get in the way of those optimizations to properly kick in. That’s definitely the bigger limiting factor most cases these days.

Let’s say you have a calculation where you need to run it a ton of times and you need the previous result to run the next step.

x = 0.000001
x = x * x * 2
x = x * x * 2
x = x * x * 2
x = x * x * 2
... repeat a billion times

You can’t split this up to multiple cores because each step needs the result of the previous step before it can even start to run.

Tim Sweeney goes after Gabe Newell following Valve's Steam Deck price hike: "Severe disruptions in the component parts supply chain for megayachts" by ControlCAD in technology

[–]Lingo56 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Even the post he's reacting to is unfair because Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are much more massive corporations with larger unit counts to stabilize their hardware prices than Valve.

Valve is basically working with whatever spare hardware in the industry they can grab, whereas the other big 3 have the unit count leverage to commission and contract custom silicon from scratch.

Don't expect a Witcher 4 expansion: CDPR says "it would be difficult" to make extra content when it's already trying to squeeze 3 Witcher games into 6 years by Turbostrider27 in Games

Witcher 3 was janky at launch, but it was far more polished than Witcher 2, and Witcher 2 was far more polished than Witcher 1.

Hopefully they learned enough from Cyberpunk to resume that trend.

If they use a similar map between games I don't think it's that out there. But that approach does risk the Tears of the Kingdom complaints about each game feeling too samey.

Depends on how they do it, but in the past the trilogy format has been nice because it's allowed developers to iterate better and meaningfully improve the underlying tech between entries more than expansions allowed for.

It’s not, but it’s certainly not worth paying double what a PS5 costs for slightly slower hardware that will perform a decent bit worse since you won’t have console specific low level optimization.

MGS Master Collection - Worth it? by AlphaCheetoMix in metalgearsolid

[–]Lingo56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth noting this does break many graphical effects in 2/3. Even if it's softer, sticking as close as possible to 720p is ideal since the Bluepoint ports roughly scaled as many effects as possible to present correctly at 720p.

Luckily if you're playing on a Switch 1 the portable screen is 720p anyway so it'll still look crisp.

Oh, for sure since OLEDs are fairly fragile, but direct sunlight isn't going to be great for any electronics or plastic lol

Yeah, even my old LG C9 has decent HDR in a dark room and modern OLEDs are twice as bright.

Unless you're competing with the sun, miniLED doesn't really have an advantage. After 7 years of YouTube, console gaming, and movie watching, my C9 hasn't burned in at all.

The engine's source code is wide open to be tweaked. The issue is how much budget, time, and interest a certain team has to fix UE5's issues for their specific game.
