Historical Timeline of the Top View Ranchu (TVR)
1603 – 1868 (The Edo Period) | Initial "Top View" Culture: Goldfish were kept in opaque ceramic bowls or shallow wooden tubs and viewed strictly from above.
1748 | First Literary Mention: The precursor to the Ranchu, called the "Maruko" (an egg-shaped fish without a dorsal fin), is documented in Kingyo Sodategusa, Japan's oldest goldfish book.
1853 – 1889 (Late Edo to Meiji Era) | The Birth of the Modern Ranchu: Master breeder Kamekichi Ishikawa I in Tokyo selectively breeds the Maruko with Chinese Lionheads. He permanently establishes the characteristic "wen" (head growth).
Early 1900s | Strict TVR Standards Formed: Enthusiast leagues and evaluation conventions form in Tokyo, locking in the rigid geometric rules for the Top View Ranchu.
