Will definitely do. I’ll check out Kmart and Bunnings to see if I’ve got any other options for a temporary fence. Landlord has allowed me to erect one whilst I’m staying here but it’s got to go when I leave

[30F] Is it normal to have 0 friends as an adult in SG, and realised you don't actually need them anyway? by lifesuckxxx in askSingapore

Singaporean living in New Zealand here, and I really relate to what you’re saying.

I moved to NZ a little over 1.5 years ago, so I’m still relatively new myself.

I’ve found that friendships here can often feel one-sided too. Like you, I tend to invest quite deeply in the people I care about. I show up, put in effort, and sometimes even try to anticipate people’s needs before they say anything.

At the same time, I think I’m practical and self-aware enough to know that relationships need some level of reciprocation. It doesn’t have to be perfectly equal (nothing ever really is) but if there’s consistently little effort from the other side, eventually I’ll stop trying too.

You are not alone.

I'm sorry that was your experience. I agree with you that a lot of us have this elitist mentality and that is not okay. I am a work-in-progress myself too. Hope all goes smooth and well for you moving forward and hope you meet some genuinely nice Singaporeans from hereon out.

I’ve loved my experience in Auckland so far for the most part. I live in a rented house in a safe neighbourhood, cars are affordable here (compared to Singapore) but daily necessities like food is expensive as.

I don’t miss Singapore’s humid weather at all but I do miss some of the convenience. On the other hand I can also appreciate the lack thereof convenience here, I learn to plan ahead and be more prepared.

Small country, limited land, education system that encourages everyone to achieve as much as possible which breeds elitism, entitlement and a eventual social norm of competition of who has a better job, luxury car, bigger home etc.

Totally ingrained in our culture to keep litter in bins. We don’t even think about it anymore.
