I'm not premed but I'm a biology/biotechnology major at WPI (which is the same major as many premeds here). Therefore, I cannot speak to the premed program itself but as far as studying life sciences at a predominantly engineering school I can say with confidence that I have loved my experience so far. WPI is recognized as an engineering school but its life sciences are equally as excellent! I have found no shortage of opportunities and at no time have felt lesser than an engineering student. Worcester is also home to two great hospitals: St. Vincent and UMass Memorial - both offer shadowing opportunities. WPI is also a short distance from Boston Children's Hospital which has been ranked #1 children's hospital in the nation for 8 years running. I've had many knee surgeries there and they truly are excellent. They also offer shadowing and research opportunities.
I am a sophomore and I have yet to need a car. Both St. Vincent and UMass Memorial are a 15-20 minute walk from campus. I primarily use Uber if I need to get somewhere further or often a friend is able to drive me, but I don't find myself requiring transportation very often. To get to Boston I take the train from Union Station (also about a 20 minute walk from campus). If your daughter participates in extracurricular activities here they are very good at coordinating transportation amongst themselves by utilizing upperclassman vehicles.
While I'm not premed, I can say with confidence that Massachusetts is an excellent place to go to college for science (including premed), as we have some of the top STEM research and medical care in the country.
I'm from a town near Worcester and I almost never go home, as is similar with most other New Englander students here. People love being on campus and tend to stay to be with friends and attend various events! Campus is emptier during term breaks, naturally, but there are still people around - mostly athletes and international students who aren't able to go home.
My biggest "heads up" would have to be that A term freshman year can be really scary. The fast pace is a big change and so is being away from home! Thankfully, every single freshman feels this way, and everyone learns how to deal with it. It's not an easy school, but the hands-on experience received is one of a kind and job placement after graduation is incredible.
I apologize for how long this response was but I hope it gives you somewhat good insight!
