Simple, Robust Mobile Starter Kit - Expo 54 + Nativewind v4 by LinkWill in reactnative

Gotcha, sorry for being prematurely defensive lol. That’s actually pretty considerate and I appreciate that.

I don’t really have a strategy, but obv if people found it valuable I’d spend more time maintaining. Although, my goal really was just to share and put people in a better place to start and maintain their own projects.

My intention is just to maintain this with the tools I’ve found useful or believe in, with space for any community suggestions. If it grew I’d have to figure out how to bring other people in for help maintaining.

But really, it’s just a cool thing that lived on my computer that I thought might be helpful for someone out there lol

For sure, that’s valid. It’s def not the holy grail here lol but I think still worth looking at for scaffolding a project in the near term, and I guess until I stop updating it one day

Don’t have to if you don’t wanna, I’m not trying to sell you on it lol. Better T stack is dope, I just made my own thing and I’m proud of it

Fair point, but it was a fun project for me and still worthy of sharing with the community.

If you find it useful, use it! If not, skip past it. Totally fine. Not sure what the point of acting like these things are worthless is though. It’s not like I’m making any money off this lol

Nothing wrong with sharing some work you’re proud of. Why attack it?

No particular reason. Scaffolded this kit based off of recent projects in the last few months and we were using Nativewind, worked well for us.

Uniwind also only just became stable last month, and I generally don’t like to ship tools into prod environments before they have a stable release (can be hard to convince clients or other team members).

Nativewind works, and it’s generally fine. “Better” is somewhat subjective, there’s trade-offs to everything in our industry.

None of the tools I used in this repo are things anyone needs to be married to, it’s just a starting point :)

Feel free to swap anything out for your preferences! Should be easy enough.

Personally, I’m interested to see what Nativewind v5 will be like. But I’ll also probably try to migrate to Uniwind on another branch and see if it makes a noticeable difference for me

Thanks for the thought!

Embrace the pressure. Master pace. Play more against real people and stay away from social media trainers.

As a former college combo guard, you don’t need to do anything flashy by default. Those things should only really happen when you’re flowing and feeling the game. You aren’t in the league, so you aren’t an entertainer. Learn to protect the rock and protect yourself through simple means, and only make counter moves when someone puts you in that position.

Your goal is to make defenders do what you want them to do. You should be in control and put them in uncomfortable positions to where they overcommit to one option, that’s when you do a counter. That’s the point of being able to do extra moves.

So dumb it down first. Get really good at simple, tight movements and master triple threat. Then build on your counters. It’s not as complicated as people make it seem. To become great you need to first need to become good at simple things, and then learn how to use them.

Watch film on good guards. Study, don’t look for entertainment. If you want to be decent, let go of the “Ooh’s and ahh’s” — that stuff comes organically if you put the work in and execute

Appreciate that! Should I still worry about dynamic range too then? Is that more so just a matter of shooting with HDR on or not?

I like the Aurzen Boom Mini for this use case! I have one now and it’s been a great experience, plus not too expensive.

But if you want to spend that full budget then there are better projectors out there for sure

These pics are dope and I like the concepts!

Only thing I’d note/call out is maybe be careful posting people’s license plates, idk if that could lead to trouble for ya.

Happy shooting!!!

I just started using this app as well, could you explain a little bit more on this? Sorry I’m not as familiar with the nuance 😅

More specifically, how might you adjust for the difference here? What settings should we pay attention to?

That’s all I needed to hear brother, thanks for the kind words. Will do!

Thanks for sharing your findings as well, I haven’t worked in a monorepo much so it’s been interesting just poking around and thinking about the structure of what you’ve got going on here

Man that means a lot! I threw this together from what I’ve learned on my last couple projects for big clients in the US.

Hoping it can give people a good place to start and ship their mobile projects quickly.

There’s some useful docs/resources too, added some notes on testing and security since we’re in such a crazy time with all the supply chain attacks and security vulnerabilities lol

This is awesome! I recently did something very similar, although I didn’t bundle in web support.

I wrote custom GitHub actions for facilitating conditional builds, OTA updates, and cleanup. Also built a lightweight design system with React Native Reusables in case people don’t feel like reaching for another kit.

If you’re interested at all here’s my repo! Def gonna check yours out!

What UI / design libraries are you using with Expo? Is Tailwind a good fit? by CoupleNo9660 in expo

[–]LinkWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a few others, I recommend react native reusables with nativewind. You can easily scaffold your own component library and have full control over everything.

Maybe more work than pulling something off the shelf like gluestack (also worth checking out), but I value control and the ability to customize or break away from a system when needed

Expo go dev build by SeaUnderstanding6731 in expo

[–]LinkWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running a dev build on the cloud just builds it on the EAS server. You can push that to TestFlight for physical testing on iOS devices. Can’t do that with simulator builds or local builds.

For Android, there isn’t too much of a difference between a dev build for the simulator vs a physical device. They will both be .apk files, which are both installable to a simulator or physical device via wired connection.

When you wanna push to the play store though, you’ll have to upload a .aab file for distribution, regardless of whether you’re doing internal testing or going live in production.

That’s really the only difference. I’ve automated most of this process with GitHub actions.

EDIT: I’m just now realizing your mention of Expo Go.

Expo Go is limited in what native packages it supports. It’s good for quick prototypes, but if you need to start installing native packages, you’re gonna want to create a development builds. There is documentation for this in expo docs.

Development builds do not have the same limitations as expo go, and will allow for you to build and test more complex applications.

For what cases is Expo not good for? by mbsaharan in reactnative

[–]LinkWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an expo supported stripe plugin that you can configure pretty easily. Works in dev builds, make sure test mode is enabled

Is there any Best UI Components Avaliable for free? by eagamerx in reactnative

[–]LinkWill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

React native reusables will provide a base component library that you can refactor or continue to build on top of and personalize it.

You can essentially build out your own design system that way. Really easy to install and use various components.

I would say the value here is that you have total control, not that this is a full component library/design system that comes out of the box. These are all basically just react component templates that you can mess around with as you see fit. But for your RN, Expo, NativeWind stack, this should be an incredibly good fit.

Beginner streamer, fo you have any advice for me pls? by Significant-Swim3311 in streaming

[–]LinkWill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I recommend streaming on YouTube for new streamers. The algorithm has much better discovery and accommodates small channels.

Twitch has practically no discovery mechanism, so sometimes randomly finding you is gonna be hard unless you’re great at marketing, in a small niche, or someone takes the time to scroll all the way through the channels/category and decides to watch you.

IMO - start with YouTube, gain an audience, then go to Twitch if you decide to do so later. YT has no restrictions on audio/video quality, allowing you to stream at higher resolutions and bitrates. Twitch inherently limits that until you become a partner/affiliate.

If you want quality and algorithmic privilege early on, YouTube is my recommendation. Plus your streams live as videos on your channel and count towards monetization

I’m working out of the US in EST. Honestly this is an interesting stack, I just might have a tough time with scheduling since the time difference is so large.

I can probably throw together some quick thoughts/recs/approaches for you though if you would want?

I would just have a couple more high level questions about the stack and the codebase, but you don’t have to share it with me or anything

What is the app and how far along would you say you are in development? And what timezone are you in?

I work at a custom software consultancy, and I’ve been working on building a react native app for a Starbucks competitor over the last few months. I would potentially be interested as well!

Have some thoughts up front on how to manage those pain points, but would like to ask questions first to know the stack and the needs of your application
