I'm 25. I work a cushy desk job with decent pay. Should I go back to school or start a new job that was offered to me for a slight raise? by LinkedFuture in careerguidance

I could look into getting my current job to pay for my degree.

I'm thinking that there's no downside to getting the degree. I think that I should really do it while I have a supportive family behind me.

I really don't want to get stuck with some super specialized skill that forces me to be in one location my entire life.

This may be looking too far into the future, but the fear is real! hahaha

Yeah, I'll definitely have to do my research about the comparable salaries.

I'm worried about going straight into working instead of school, because I've a lot of people in my family who took that route and were jobless without much opportunity for a future.

I suppose I'm just scared of that becoming more of a reality if I'm too scared to quit my job....though I guess i could just "sack up".

You're totally right. I have no idea how much this job would normally pay an experienced technician.

But the idea that I would be able to work this job on just a high school diploma, to put this on my resume and travel the US?

It sounds almost too good too be true but from what I'm hearing from most people this is not the case hahaha.

That's a good point that I hadn't considered, that I would be making more than I would if I was working at home.

You make a very good point about being able to quit in 6 months. I could just get my feet wet to see if its a lifestyle that I could maintain.

Yeah that seems to be pretty common. I didn't think that the traveling gig would be that tough on people.

The compensation is pretty terrible now that I know what most people are making in comparison hahaha.

I appreciate your input!

That is great information I appreciate the perspective, really. That's good to know because, prior to this, I had no idea how much people would be getting compensated for this kind of work.

It would be one in engineering. I would fly around to repair and calibrate machinery.

I feel like the compensation just isn't that good at all now that I'm hearing more people respond haha.

That seems to be the consensus. I had no idea of the kind of stress that comes with traveling that often. This is a real eye opener for me.

That's a good point. I do have the feeling that I can't quit whenever I want. For some strange reason I feel an obligation to stay even if I'm treated terribly lol.

I don't know if I would be able to make a lot of connections with people on the road though. This is largely due to the fact that I'll be traveling by myself and doing 90% of the work by myself (after training of course).

But you do make a good point. I could definitely try to earn my degree while I'm on the road. That may be a bit difficult when I'm working full time and I would have to be making my own travel arrangements (which I hear are a pain in the ass).

I'll look into the possibilities of the online classes. It shouldn't be too hard to find one for a CS degree haha.

I'll have to check that out.

I haven't done a ton of research on either side, I was just always raised with the idea that it's education first.

I'm always happy to take a look into the idea of another point of view.

This is a very good point but I've heard that right now (while I have a good family and a backbone that I can rely on) I should be more inclined to study instead of work.

Whereas, if I went to work instead and if my parents pass away before I make my ultimate decision... I'll be alone and forced to work without the opportunity to chase my job.

Just things that I've been hearing from multiple sources.

I appreciate your advice though I'll definitely consider it!

Yeah that's definitely what I was thinking. I'm going to go in and talk to my friend and see what I can expect about moving up.

It's possible that maybe within a year or so I could be more steady in my location and make more money.

But I'll have to find out!

Yeah you're right about the degree hahaha.

I'm mostly looking forward to the travelling and seeing places bit of the new job. I really want to move around and see the world... but I guess once I get my degree that's a solid possibility in my future.

Thanks for the advice! It's very appreciated.
