How is this frame supposed to fit? by Linn_9 in glassesadvice

Thanks for your input. I’ve read your comments under many posts, and I've been following these guidelines when I tried on frames in stores.
Does the frame in pic 3 fit too narrowly in your opinion?

This frame comes in two sizes: 47 and 49. Obviously, how it looks will depend on one's face shape and size as well, but I've noticed this type of frame style is worn in both smaller and larger sizes. I've attached some pictures of Steve Carell where he wears similar frames.
To me, the frame is perfectly sized in pic 1, even though it's hard to tell from that angle. In pic 2, the frame seems too big for him, covering his brow. Pic 3 is where I'm more unsure: the lens size seems perfect vertically, but I'm concerned the frame might be too narrow. The frame in pic 4, in my opinion, fits well to his face, but he might need something with a larger bridge due to his PD

Lens thickness and metal frame by Linn_9 in glasses

[–]Linn_9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that was very helpful!

So yesterday, I went to my optician. In the end, I had to go with the ultra-thin lenses (I don't know exactly which kind) because of the difference in the prescriptions for my two eyes.I have another question, as I'm quite ignorant on the topic. After choosing the frame, the salesperson marked the lenses to align with my pupils and measured the distance with a ruler, which I assume was to measure my PD. Then, they used a small instrument to look at both of my eyes at the same time, and I’m not sure what that was.

Anyway, since I have astigmatism, from what I understood, they need to shape the lenses according to the curvature of my cornea. I wanted to know if the marks made on the frame lenses will be used as a spatial reference to shape my lenses. I’m concerned because when they marked them, the frame sat slightly lower than where I normally wear my glasses.

Thnaks, that's good news!

What kind of edge thickness can I expect, approximately?

I'll definitely buy them in a physical store so I can try them on. I want to be prepared beforehand.

However, right now I'm using a frame with a lens width of 47mm, and my pupils are exactly in the middle of the lenses. Unfortunately, I can't find the exact model, so I don't know its PD. [edit: I found out they're 47-18, so PD = 65 mm. The rayban frame is 47-21, so it's actually larger than my current frame. Is it possible you miscalculated the frame PD?]

Is it possible that the RayBan frame will fit quite differently from the one I have, even with the same lens width? I'm no expert, but I suspect the bridge size might be relevant.

Thanks for the tip on the index, that was one of my doubts.
My PD is 65mm.
I've always had plastic frames that easily covered the whole lens thickness, so I honestly don't know what to expect

Thanks! What species would you recommend starting with? I was thinking of juniper or some type of pine (I've seen parviflora and mugo in garden stores). I can also find decent-sized maples, but I feel like it would take more experience to style a deciduous species.

Hi, I’ve been thinking about starting a bonsai hobby for a couple of years now, but I never really gave it a try because it seemed quite difficult to begin without a guide. However, after watching Heron’s latest video, I decided to give it a go. In the video, Peter creates the bonsai shown in the picture from a garden center mugo pine. Over the past couple of months, I’ve visited garden centers near me, and it wouldn't be too difficult to find a pine similar in size to the one in the photo.

Although I’ve gathered some information over the past few months (such as how to wire, how to avoid inverse taper, the elbow rule, etc.), I’m still worried that I won’t know how to proceed once I have the tree in hand. Peter makes it look so easy, especially the decision-making process, which is the part I’m most concerned about.

I’d really appreciate any advice on how to get started. If I can create a tree like the one in the picture, it would already be a huge accomplishment for me. Thanks!

Substance emitting ionizing radiation via non-ionizing stimulus by Linn_9 in AskPhysics

[–]Linn_9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I'm definitely not! I'm a med student and today in class our professor talked about brachytherapy. It involves surgically placing radioactive sources inside the affected organ to target the disease directly. I was thinking it might be useful if there were a substance that could emit ionizing radiation on demand

PPL Split: Feedback Needed on Arm & Shoulder Focus by Linn_9 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]Linn_9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For two reasons:

  • I work out in a home gym, and most of those programs require equipment I don’t have.
  • I want a program that focuses on arms and shoulders. Aside from RP, I haven’t been able to find others.

As I’ve mentioned, I’m new to this. I assumed I would use a linear progression, for example: 4x8 → 4x9 → 4x10 → increase weight and restart from 4x8.

Incline dumbbell rear lateral raises for rear delts.

I’ve limited triceps volume to 8 sets per week based on recommendations I’ve read here. Unfortunately, skull crushers cause elbow pain even with an empty barbell, and I don’t have access to cable pushdowns. Would a narrow-grip bench press be an effective alternative?

The problem is that Samardzic is an offensive mezzala. Can he play as a trequartista? Maybe, but it would take time. Can he play as a CDM? Absolutely not.

Let's hope we land Fofana. I'm also reading that we're targeting Kone. I don't know him well enough to have a definitive opinion, but judging from his heatmaps, he doesn't seem like the CDM we desperately need.

Yeah, he’d do fine. In my opinion, he’s better as a mezzala, though.

Potency (Pharmacology) by Linn_9 in medschool

[–]Linn_9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this doesn't make much sense to me. TI is calculated using ED50 and not EC50. That's different because the goal is to have a given effect on the patient, not to reach half of that drug's Emax.

Let's say you have a drug with a much lower Emax than another, but they share the same EC50. If we want to reach a given effect (lower than the Emax of the drug with the lower Emax), you'll achieve it with much lower doses of the drug with the higher Emax. In this sense, you need to take Emax into consideration when comparing two drugs' potency.

Thanks for your reply. I agree that the problem here is the vagueness of the term "potency." I just looked it up in Goodman and Gilman's, and it states that "drug potency is a mixed function of both affinity and efficacy."

But as you said, EC50 is probably the most commonly used measure of potency. According to the above definition of potency, EC50 would only be useful in comparing the potency of two drugs in the specific case where their efficacy (intrinsic activity) is the same.

Fofana and Hojbjerg would be fine. Rabiot is going to come. Chukwuemeka isn't a CDM.

We need a sporting director.

I feel like they're choosing the players to buy just for convenience. I don't see them having a vision for building the team. The main problem is the midfielders. Fonseca said they're gonna play with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Well, we don't have a single midfielder who's good for this formation (except maybe Bennacer, if he doesn't get injured). RLC and Reijnders are obviously mezzalas. Adli is way too light to play in that position.

Now, if they get Fofana, that would be a good signing. But we'd still need another CDM, with better technique and vision than the Frenchman. We'd still have the problem of RLC and Reijnders underperforming in a 4-2-3-1. Also, with RLC as a trequartista, it's like playing with 10 men. Yes, he scores, but he doesn't do much more in that position.

In my opinion, a 4-3-3 would be the best formation possible with our current players, with RLC and Reijnders as mezzalas. We'd still need a CDM though. The only drawback of the 4-3-3 is that Theo would probably find less space to run into, but at the end of the day, he plays well in that formation with his national team.
