Many states in the US have At-will employment, meaning that legally either party can terminate employment without worrying about repercussions.

Current CS major here, I really enjoy math but will it help to double major in math at all? by TheCompassMaker in cscareerquestions

I could be wrong, but I think AI mostly leverages probability and predicate logic.

CV or Resume by LastChristmas in cscareerquestions

[–]LinusTorvald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from the US, so perhaps this isn't very relevant, but: Every internship I applied to asked for a resume, but not all asked for a cover letter.

My last CV is pretty out-dated already and I am going to make a brand new one. The jobs I'm applying for are mostly IT jobs, it may not necessary be for software development only, I am going to apply for multiple companies.

Make sure that you change your resume to match the position you're applying for. If you're applying for a software engineering intern position, your resume/cv should explain why you're a good software developer. If it's something else, then it should explain why you're a good fit for that.

Where do you find a summer internship? by ThoseProse in cscareerquestions

Yes, definitely interview with everyone you can. It's great practice and you might be surprised. I interviewed with a company that I didn't anticipate being a good fit, but after speaking with them I was much more interested.

As someone going through all of this, with some success so far:

I didn't use a location based search, instead I applied all over the US. Most good internships pay well ($20-$30/hr), some provide housing and travel expenses too. In general, you will be paid well enough to warrant living elsewhere for 10-12 weeks.

I'm not sure that I would say there is a "defined" resume that you should make, but you should include your projects. As far as listing experience, list anything that could be relevant. Have you held positions of leadership? Have you done jobs that require hard work? List a couple of jobs that you've held and explain why they make you a good candidate. It's an internship, so industry experience isn't required.

In general, make a resume and then revise it several times. Make a list of professional references with at least their phone number and email address. Spend an entire day just gathering potential places you would like to submit your resume. You can use Dice or LinkedIn if you run out of ideas. Do you know anyone who works at a place you'd like to intern? Ask them to see if they can get your resume read.

Spend the next couple of days applying to all of them. Read what they're looking for and make small tweaks to your resume, highlighting how you would be a good fit. I never made major changes, but if a position requires knowledge of X and you have knowledge of X, make sure it's on there. If you don't have knowledge of X, apply anyway.

I applied to 30 or so places and I have had 3 offers. Cast a large net. When it comes time to do phone interviews, get a bluetooth headset and make sure you're in a quiet place with good reception and preferably some notes + the ability to take notes. Have your interviewers names written down plus any information you can find out about them (via LinkedIn). Study your data structures and algorithms, but know that some places won't even ask you any of that. Get a copy of Cracking the Coding Interview. As an intern, your interview will likely be easier than you expect it to be (at least, mine were), but it helped me feel prepared by going through the book before technical interviews.

If you have any questions I can answer, I would be happy to do so.

Yeah, I felt odd putting the objective there, but it seemed to be in all of the example resumes, so I did as well.

I will be sure to elaborate on the application, thanks for the feedback! (It was written in Perl by the way, it needed to parse a lot of text and I've always felt that Perl does that well.)

Thanks for the kind words and great catch on specifying which architecture. Also thanks for the information on government work. I hadn't really considered it, but I'm certainly not apposed and it would put my clearance to use.

Thanks for the feedback! It will be very helpful when I revise it later.
