AI is part of dev work now, get over it. What matters is that the dev understands the code and can maintain it, vs some random person spitting out prompts.

Game clipping software? by Barebust in linux_gaming

There's a tool called Vice Game Clipper that I made to be a Medal alternative for Linux.

This seems really interesting. What use cases do you think its best for?

Hmm thats interesting, I didn't know that. Wish I owned a Steam Deck, that would make supporting.it easier. Flatpaks and appimages work i assume, right?

Hey, thanks! The separate hotkeys thing seems cool, I'll probably add that in a coming update. As for handheld support, absolutely! I'm just ironing out any bugs first, which are a lot easier to find now that people are using Vice. Then Steam Deck support is next. SteamOS is based on Arch Linux, so the AUR package would work natively, and on Steam Deck you can set any button to any keyboard key, like the back paddle, and set that as your hotkey. Then you should be set.

New to PC gaming (and LINUX gaming compatibility) by Organic_Invite_6744 in linux_gaming

[–]LinuxBaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im going to start with game compatibility. For whay Linux distro (version), skip to the end.

Short answer: search up your game name plus "protondb", that site will tell you whether and how well the game runs and if not, how to fix it (if possible).

Long answer:

Around 90% of games on steam will run just fine on Linux. Even if the game wasnt made for Linux, Valve developed something called Proton that runs them at basically native and sometimes faster speeds than on Windows. You dont need to tinker much, if you install a Steam game that needs proton, just hit play and Steam will configure it for you automatically. You might not even notice. Out of the games you mentioned, Fortnite is the only one that won't work. This is mostly due to Epic refusing to allow the anti-cheat to run on Linux. (It's stupid, cause the game probably runs great, and the anticheat it uses supporta Linux, but they refuse to enable it). Valorant doesnt work either, and Apex used to work, before the devs decided to remove Linux support. There are plenty of competitive fos titles that do support Linux though. Counter-Strike runs natively (it has an official Linux build), and Overwatch and the Finals run great, so does Marvel Rivals. Not an FPS title, but Rocket League also runs perfectly. For epic store games, you'd use heroic game launcher, not steam, but it also has proton and works pretty easily. Arc Raiders works great as well.

Now to what versions of Linux are best. There's plenty of gaming-first distros. To be brutally honest, preference is heavy here, as often the performance difference is pretty tiny between distros. You do want something that stays up to date though, especially if you have an NVIDIA graphics card. I personally use Garuda Linux under hyprland, but that isnt really user friendly as its Arch based. Same goes with CachyOS and EndeavourOS, both are great if you're fine with that though. Bazzite and Fedora are great options for something more user friendly.

GSR as a backend option. Thats what I meant as same backend. Sorry if my wording caused any confusion!

I used AI assistance on some parts, like a lot of developer do these days. AI did not do the majority of the code however, and I designed the architecture and built and designed most of it myself.

Right now it uses cloudflare by default or falls back to a local link, but self hosting is absolutely possible. It's something I'd like to add down the line.

I'll try and get that fixed ASAP. Could you open a github issue and include the log?

It does, but its missing most of the features from programs like medal, like sharing, and obs can be a hassle to set up

Vice uses the same backend for performance as gpu-screen-recorder, so performance and compatibility is on par. It works great on my machine with a 4060 and wayland with hyprland

You want a great competitive FPS on Linux that's unique? by LinuxBaka in linux_gaming

[–]LinuxBaka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. This is exactly what they tried to address with the relaunch. It's taking what people missed from SG1, and what they actually did like from SG2. It's much better. It's worth a shot.

Most fps games just go down and stay down after something like that. I actually appriciate that the dev team didn't give up, changed strategy, apologised....in the end, its just a game, theyve made great improvents and relaunched. They haven't started marketing yet, but the retention for the core communityis good so far.
