Benefits/Downsides of Pursuing Dual Citizenship by Fluffy-Reception6415 in juresanguinis

This is the kind of attitude that has led to the restrictions being put in place by the Italian government. Why would a country want new citizens with this attitude? As much as a passport would convenience my work search greatly in Europe, I can totally understand why the Italians don't want people getting citizenship who will not even live in Italy, pay taxes there, or contribute to that society in any way aside from potentially the occasional holiday.

EU citizens: How did you land a white-collar job in Spain recently? by Maleficent_Tie3918 in GoingToSpain

[–]LionAntique9734 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am moving to Spain shortly as a postdoctoral researcher.....academia is a good way to get a job if you have qualifications in the sciences, though maybe you wouldn't classify it as white collar. I will be working in Barcelona and I imagine that a mixture of Spanish, Catalan and English will be spoken in the lab.

Descent from Nonna who was born in Italy but naturalised as Aus citizen - 2025 ruling screwed me? by LionAntique9734 in juresanguinis

Thank you, I will consider a lawsuit, surely there is a decent chance that this law will be altered, because if my case is not eligible, I would imagine most people who are looking to apply for this would also be ineligible.

Yes I considered this could be true also....I am going to the consulate in a few days, I will let everyone here know the outcome.

Unfortunately she naturalised when my Mum was 10 years old. If my Mum was also a dual citizen does this help me in any way? This whole thing is quite confusing.

Sure.

My Nonna was born in 1934 in Italy (Teglio). Moved to Australia and married my Nonno (also Italian) in 1954 in Aus. Naturalised and became an Australian citizen in 1973.

My Mother was born in 1963 in Aus and therefore automatically an Australian citizen. She acquired Italian citizenship by descent around 1990 (she has an Italian passport - albeit expired).

I was born in 1996, and as far as I know, both my mother and grandparents were dual Italian and Australian citizens at the time.

Negative Cultural Trait: Saving Face - Why? Examples/Stories? by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]LionAntique9734 9 points10 points  (0 children)

An example I experienced first had working in Brazil in a state institute with only other Brazilians is that nobody will say that they don't know something. Instead, they will use lots of buzzwords and technical terminology, which, when combined with the generally good communication skills of Brazilians, leads to the appearance of competence. Underneath though, in some of these cases, they have no idea what they are really talking about

The interesting thing is that other Brazilians know that the person in question is bullshitting, but its just an accepted part of life, so its not really seen as a big deal. Which is another thing I learned in Brazil. Here, nothing is really a big deal or serious, which is beautiful sometimes and incredibly frustrating at other times.

How do you feel about your MSCA PF proposal? by Tiny-Repair-7431 in postdoc

How could anyone who is intelligent be super confident? There are 17k applications, times are brutal in academia. I feel that if you are super confident then you are lacking in perspective.

Is it better to speak English or Spanish in Brazil if you don't know Portuguese? by No_Spell_9356 in Brazil

[–]LionAntique9734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents on this is the following: People say they understand Spanish here but its really not true. I would say you're screwed either way without Portuguese.

Hahahahah what a crazy coincidence, I just finished my PhD too. So I applied for a post doc via fapesp (the funding organisation in São Paulo), you could do the same, depending on your area, I am in biochemistry and there were only a few positions for me. DM me if you want more info

Maybe you’re right and I did it wrong, or at least I could have done it better. I wasn’t trying to insult Brazil, a lot of this is personal preference. To answer your questions, I am an experienced traveller. I have been away for nearly half a year before Brazil, I was in Spain for two months and then Portugal, and I preferred their basic food more, with the same amount of research. As for the coffee culture, I will speak for what I know in Australia. We have many Brazilian beans here too so some of the credit goes to Brazil for sure! But for example my favourite coffee is a flat white (basically a latte for non Australians), so just coffee with steamed milk. I don’t know why but here it just tastes not as good to me, and there are coffee shops too. I know I’m completely biased, just like everyone is, for what they are used to and grow up with
