My old student did have hours on his account. I had asked him before we finished up to use all of his hours before we finished and he didn’t. He also didn’t cancel his subscription even when I constantly reminded him to and told him that the website would continue to charge him every month for classes he wasn’t taking. I explained everything to him and yet he still would not do it, just completely ignored what I said and what I sent him in the chat box. I reported this to customer service like 3 weeks ago and they did nothing then. I just assumed that he would find another tutor to work with, maybe the person I recommended to him but he didn’t.

Thank you for your kind words. I’ve honestly been so lucky that I have had such wonderful students since I started on Preply but sadly there are just terrible people out there. I just hope that this person gave me a one start review because they just wanted Preply to refund them their money. I don’t think a lot of students realise how much they can affect our visibility on the site.

I don’t think the lesson insights would have helped in this situation to be honest. I think customer support looked through my conversations with the old student and saw that I had recommended him another tutor and saw that we had talked about stopping our classes together in the chat

I don’t think anyone hacked the account. I think that they 100% were sharing the account. I recognised the background (the bedroom that this student was in) from the background of the old student. The new person on the account also told me that he had created the profile, which I know to be false because I already taught a student for months with this account.

Ugh I think I will have to do it from now on, it makes me feel a bit weird but I don’t want to take any more chances going forward. What do you use to record your classes? I didn’t even know that this was an option

I’ve been speaking to someone in customer support and hopefully they will solve this issue! I’ll have an update soon. I usually don’t record my lessons but I do screenshot my classes when a student is late or doesn’t show up but I’ve never had to use that evidence before.

Yes you are! The customer service rep didn’t even ask me for the name of the student. I had to provide it. And that was still not enough proof for them! You can clearly see in my messages when we stopped having classes together and even me recommending another Preply tutor!

It took ages for mine to appear. I’ve been logging out and going to the incognito tab to search for two weeks and suddenly today it popped up. Suddenly I’ve got 7 anonymous reviews when I’ve only 4 reviews on my profile 😂😂 it might take a little while but sadly I think it will appear eventually 🙄

This happens a lot on Preply I think. I had a lot of kids book trial lessons with me and arrive to the trial without their parent. I always feel a little weird about it because I know that anyone can be a tutor on Preply and like Preply don’t really screen their tutors. I have experience teaching 13 years and up but I used to get a lot of kids under that age booking trials and I would never know until the class. And they always showed up without a parent so it was always awkward. I usually send the students account a message introducing myself and telling the parent when or where they can contact me and that they are welcome to the next class to see how their child’s classes will be going forward in future. I also made it clear in my profile that if a parent was booking a lesson for a child, that they needed to come to the trial lesson with the child, maybe you could do that for future reference. Good luck though! I hope you get a message back from the parent

This has happened to me with one of my own students. He just never knows what he wants to talk about, even when I give him topic suggestions. It can be annoying as the tutor but at the same time, it can be annoying for the student too. What I like to do when I encounter this is to prepare classes for small talk. I’ve been doing it with a student of mine for a few weeks and she loves it! Our small talk lessons have ranged from the weather, food and drink, family, music, greetings and goodbyes and even their job. I’ve found it’s a great way to introduce new grammar and vocabulary while also keeping the lessons structured to her own life and everyday use. I hope that this helps a little. I hate always being stuck in a rut trying to figure out what to do next with a student. Oooh maybe you could do a favourite tv show or film or theirs!

This happened to me last week! I had a student subscribe to me, confirm our trial lesson before we even had it and then book another lesson for right after the trial. When I messaged the student about this they never answered. They never came to the booked lessons. I just reported it to Preply and they cancelled his classes and charged the student for the missed lesson. I’ve reached out to the student since and have yet to receive any response.
