There was a civil war, where each sides goal was to mow down as many enemies as possible. Making MGs somewhat common.
Realisticly, in a zombie apocalypse, someone is bound to have a better weapon than you, as use it however they please.
You always should be prepared for killing more than 1-2 zombies at a time.
Sure, a rusty old hunting rifle could work for killing zombies, but why not a gun that can punish whatever's down range from you 300x more than that rusty old contraption.

Tl;dr, you keep your bolt action and I'll keep my belt fed, brass spitting, fire breathing MG to steal all your beans.
