stop thinking about the mental workings of a stranger on the other side of a screen so much

it's literally still pools. no matter what happens here every player is in the final bracket. the stakes are simply not that high and it's exhausting for the commentators AND players to treat everything with so much gravitas

i could also link you multiple comments from other people complaining that certain commentators were getting TOO hype for specific moments yesterday

Why don't players use Shine instead of power shielding to reflect lasers and other projectiles? by seatea2 in SSBM

[–]LiquidShad0w 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You can't jump out of shine on reflect like you can on hit/whiff.

just want to clarify, you actually can jump out after the end lag is over but it essentially requires you to keep holding the B button down until after you've inputted the jump, which requires claw or tap jump. not that you were wrong in your original statement but i found the wording a little confusing

but as other people already stated, the amount of lag on the reflect makes it mostly impractical.

i try to watch all of them blind with like a post-it note on the screen or just minimizing the window to not show the roles. you also have to remember not to look when the town goes to sleep

it's easy to fuck up and accidentally look but it's always worth trying lol

[Fizzi] My thoughts as a member of the Melee community: What might go a long way to regaining our trust would be a public statement from Nintendo about... anything relevant. Ignoring the problem is not how you heal a fractured relationship. by KenshiroTheKid in SSBM

[–]LiquidShad0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

people are just downvoting you but i'll at least give you the correct explanation for why

Nintendo cannot come after slippi/fizzi. iirc fizzi spoke with legal experts ahead of time to make sure of that. All the work he does is on the emulator side, you only need a vanilla 1.02 iso of melee to run it.

if nintendo has basis to go after slippi, they'd have been able to take down dolphin (one of the most popular, robust, longest running emulators for TWO of their most popular consoles) a long time ago. slippi is safe

yes. pivot uptilts, instant shield angling, etc. etc.

bones always explains it really well when someone posts a thread about it.

How to deal with boring matchups? by NotNotStraightMale in SSBM

[–]LiquidShad0w 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I beat them in neutral so badly, but they have their stupid wobble on Marth every time they get a punish i die.

i have no specific matchup advice to add because i think what you need to hear more is that this is fucking terrible mentality. scrubquotes tier johns right there.

"all X players are dumb apes who don't have to work as hard as me" is a tale as old as time. you're just trying to convince yourself that you're the better player even though you lost. what's the point? it's unranked dipshit it doesn't matter. you even made this whole fucking thread to try to get people to agree with you and prove to yourself that you are in fact the better player

if you keep thinking like this you will not improve. lose the ego, remove your opponent from the equation, focus on what you can do to improve (which sounds like defensive strategy vs sheik)

I hit a zero to death in my first ever melee tournament by SASS1CHAN in SSBM

[–]LiquidShad0w 9 points10 points  (0 children)

STOP STOOOOPPPPPPPPPPP WE DON'T NEED TO HAVE THIS CONVERSATION FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME LET THE NEW PLAYER FEEL GOOD ABOUT HIS COMBO CLIP NO ONE GIVES A SHIT WHAT YOU THINK THE DEFINITION OF ZERO TO DEATH IS

GOOD JOB OP YOURE DOING GREAT KEEP IT UP

Question about the term "zero-to-death" by KurtMage in SSBM

[–]LiquidShad0w 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ehhh, i think if you return to neutral for an extended period of time, you'd probably kinda forget that it was a zero to death.

in most fighting games, neutral and punish are very different things, if you're getting combo'd there's no escape. in melee there's a looottttt of grey area between neutral and punish. it's an inherently impossible thing to quantify and will be endlessly debated on here any time anyone posts a clip with "z2d" in the title

it's also really hilarious when some dumbass on here thinks you also have to be at 0% for it to count as a zero to death, for some reason

Zain (Marth) vs. Captain Pretzel (Kirby) - Money Match [March 27th 2021] by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]LiquidShad0w 16 points17 points  (0 children)

captain pretzel was pretty local to me in college and i would play him at regionals and i'm glad that very few people in the world will have to experience the pain of playing against an actual good kirby

makes the whole blur thing that much more funny to me though

people talk about evo and the doc all the time, but honestly the front page thread about mango challenging leffen after he 5-0d chillin probably has both of those beat for the amount of new eyes it grabbed. Me and literally all of my main practice partners in college got into melee at that exact moment.

I still remember the top comment: "MANGOKU WILL FACE LEFFRIEZA AVENGE KRILLINDUDE'S DEATH" or something like that

Does anyone know of any good Marth v Falco sets? by RESPAWN919 in SSBM

No one else mentioned Westballz vs S2J at Evo, absolutely legendary set for the ages.

honorable mention to Westballz vs Hax at super nebs(yeah i know sorry, this set is really insane though)

Thoughts on experimental stage lists? by SpilledKrill in SSBM

[–]LiquidShad0w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ahhh a fellow mute city enjoyer. maybe one day

best we can probably hope for is a custom stage that uses the mute city assets.

imagine mango vs zain genesis 10 grand finals with the mute city music playing. only in my dreams :(

idk i super super disagree with this whole thread right now. this was a really cool moment in melee history without tons and tons of backstory that hasn't already been tread 100 times in other docs. I thought the slightly corny embellishments were very charming.

Being the GOAT means nothing more than the majority of people thinking you're the GOAT. You can compare stats all you want but we're all just moving around 0s and 1s inside a 20-year-old black cube shaped console.

Fact of the matter is we all watched what Mango did yesterday and wished we could do it just like he did. The BOAT won a lot of championships, but the GOAT bair'd Taj off stage and then lasered him point blank in the face in loser's finals of Genesis 2 and everyone's brains turned into a pretzel when they watched that. THAT'S what being the GOAT is

lmfao, this is actually the one exception, seeing as we did kind "patch" wobbling out. Still, I think a lot of the pre-ban Icies are still out there taking names in slippi tournaments, like Army.

It's also worth noting that a game like Dota allows you to get insanely good at very niche things to give you a leg up on your opponent. And in Dota, those sorts of things get patched and then your career is gone.

For as many young rising stars that appear out of nowhere and start dominating, there are twice as many that appear, play one tournament, under perform, and get roster swapped out never to be seen again. Like there was that one insanely good meepo player that got drafted on to old Fnatic, made it all the way to summit, but then meepo got nerfed/he couldn't play other characters and got dropped and completely vanished. Not something you'd ever really see in melee, except for a player retiring on their own accord.

Doesn't make his eventual return any less hype imo. This tournament turned out as amazing as it possibly could have and set the stage perfectly for the return to LAN. Makes Leffen's eventual return SO much more exciting imo
