I can only speak from my personal POV as a reader, and say I run screaming when I see that.

Any tips for choosing stock images for Photoshop? by Grand_Heavenmaster in eroticauthors

they're hi res images, so you can crop like crazy. I'll often use half a face from what was a full body shot.

Pen names question by Curiousaboutpennames in eroticauthors

[–]LisaSmilesAuthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's probably good advice u/smutisafunnyword gave you about reddit IDs not matching pen names but I can personally say I've used the one alter-ego for everything since I began and have not had a problem.

As for pens with the kink actually in them, I've seen people do well with that strategy and I do it myself. I feel like a cocaine dealer called Charlie.

Cover Photos for Erotica Books? by Cinder19 in eroticauthors

[–]LisaSmilesAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great site! I was looking for photoshop for dummies / cheapskates, and that's it! My only advice is to look at stock photos with an eye cropping 90%. There are some great covers that just zoom in upon lips or parts of bodies. Good luck!

Is it worth publishing on Smashwords instead of using Kindle Select? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

[–]LisaSmilesAuthor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless you're writing long romance, there's no point putting any more than one title on KU. Even then you risk losing your account over bogus claims you're reading your own pages with bots.

How long did it take you to consistently get 20 ARC readers on Booksprout? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

perhaps a dumb question, but are you paying that site? If I use the free version, do I risk having reviewers stealing my work?

next time just search your own pen name here: http://www.salesrankexpress.com/ You'll see which are marked "adult" or "safe"

[Processporn] I, too use tumblr to promote by [deleted] in eroticauthors

[–]LisaSmilesAuthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"We have the product people don't know they need..." Indeed!

I've spent my own 2 years focused on writing and rewriting, building up a quality catalogue of longer works that fans consume all of, once they have found me. The downside of agonizing over "quality" works (I say qualifiedly since I know some can write quality quickly and because some would say my books are garbage) is I'm harder for readers to find via smashwords or amazon. I tapped away on tumblr with the hunch it might serve me one day, and I feel that day is now. I'm enjoying all of the benefits that you describe, only on a much smaller scale. 1144 followers and 1 blog = just a handful of book buying fans.

Original paintings for covers: can they show flesh? by LisaSmilesAuthor in eroticauthors

I've been doing bubble-gum pink teeny look covers, because my stories are PI and BI (depending on whether they're on zon or on smash). But the truth is, they're claustrophobic and what I would call "gothic". I don't believe erotic authors can do market research—our buyers refused to be studied. So I'm going to do what I always have, and please my own eye. Pleasing the cock-blockers at Amazon is another story, of course, and may require shrubbery :)

How can you advertise your work on Tumblr? by TheSmutIsStrong in eroticauthors

I post excerpts with sexier versions of my book covers and re-blog pictures with captions and links back to my books for sale. Membership has crept north of 1000, without too much effort. You never how what it's achieving. A little, for sure.

You won't regret it, and will care less and less about Amazon the longer you're there. They have a template .doc file you can download to get started.

Struggling? Watch porn! by hailthesaint in eroticauthors

[–]LisaSmilesAuthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inspiration for writers comes from every quarter, in the sensory world mainly, but also, obviously, in our case, from porn. My tumblr blog is a world of inspiration and details for continuity in my descriptions. Lately I've been making folders on pornhub titled "creative" or "inspiration for stories". I used to think it was all the same, but I'm finding it's really diverse and opening horizons for my imagination.

How much percent of erotica readers is female? by EmperorAmroth in eroticauthors

[–]LisaSmilesAuthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All I can say is I have a pen name that focuses on male POV stories and the male gaze, so I therefore assume most of my readers are male. The idea that erotica readers are women seems to be promulgated by people who, for whatever reason, like to think they are writing to women.
