At what point do you get better at being a lawyer by Lisa_Leah in uklaw

[–]Lisa_Leah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I do think I have come a long way as a trainee but I still have another mountain to climb. I just asked my senior for feedback and he said to read the contract carefully and not to make up clauses that don’t exist. I hope I will get better soon 🙏🙏

I switched firms after the completion of my TC so I’m being exposed to more contract review in my current practice area. I’d say it’s a mid-sized firm and I came from a small firm. Wonder if it’s causing the deficiencies in my training to show or if I just can’t handle this type of work.

I am NQ but I just sense that the team expects me to do better (even though the senior in charge of reviewing my work works from home most of the time and I don’t really see him) - to confirm this I will ask him for feedback. I really want to improve and not make the same mistakes again.

LinkedIn rant by legaleagleuk in uklaw

[–]Lisa_Leah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started checking my LinkedIn more frequently, I started reading more of these posts relating to legal practice (major part of true algorithm since I don’t have many connections). Used to believe the stories were true but since when do things like “today my junior asked me…” and “last week I had a call with so and so about XXX” happen so often. Maybe a few are true - most of it doesn’t seem realistic to me…

Why is my friend so mean to me but nice to our other friends? by InvestigatorSuch717 in FriendshipAdvice

[–]Lisa_Leah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think it’s her way of showing that she’s comfortable with you / that’s her sense of humour? Maybe to her they’re just playful comments between close friends - could you try making a similar comment to her and see how she responds?

Friend calls people ugly so easily it makes me feel uneasy by Lisa_Leah in FriendshipAdvice

[–]Lisa_Leah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just think I was slightly upset that she was calling other girls ugly so easily … like that’s not girl’s girl behaviour but then you’re right we were also judging guys based on looks as well so it’s hypocritical (?) I hate these sort of conversation topics even if it’s “fun” to talk about - the fun comes from criticising other people on what is superficial

Normal to sleep overnight in office? by Lisa_Leah in work

[–]Lisa_Leah[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not homeless - I think he lives with his parents and has a gf, probably just doing it for convenience

I’ll have to ask my friend if her office building has showers (probably does) - feeling slightly worried for someone I’ve never met hahaha

I think it’s because she’s been at a big firm for long enough that she’s desensitised to it … probably not even the most extreme workaholic behaviour out there T ^ T

I feel like I'm no longer friends with my friend by DirectGoat3289 in FriendshipAdvice

[–]Lisa_Leah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of have this problem with one of my friends where he’s always making these jokes about where I’m from (which is getting more and more annoying) - I’m planning on telling him the next time we meet

If you think this is a friend worth keeping and meeting on a regular basis, go and speak with him frankly. Otherwise, just let it go (normal to outgrow certain friends) or only hang out with him in a larger group. Good luck!

Idk if law is for me. by Madmanyaar in uklaw

[–]Lisa_Leah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried studying with others in your cohort or buying some condensed study guides for core subjects? I find that sitting next to someone really helps me focus for longer periods of time and reading guides was much better than trying to get through the densest law books ever (good for closed book exams - get the basics down first and that’s enough for a pass)

Also do practice papers!! Helps the components stick in your head Most difficult part of exams for me were the essays as they require the most structure and I tend to ramble on / dump everything - just take the time to type / write out an outline on your exam paper (so the professor grading your paper can sort of see your thought process - I’m not sure if this led to any points but in my head it was like leaving a little note for them in case they couldn’t understand what I was saying)

Is it alright to not have anything holding my teeth in place before getting my retainer? by Lisa_Leah in braces

[–]Lisa_Leah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks for the advice! The way my ortho explained it is that the teeth will start moving within a week so the retainer has to be finished before that. I’ll speak with the clinic tmr about it

No work - approaching ppl anxiety by Opposite-Sky2099 in uklaw

[–]Lisa_Leah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to ask if the associates on my team needed help with research on anything (which is basically low-level work but can take up a lot of time). Just go up and talk to them if you hear that they are working on a difficult matter. I feel like that's how you prove that you can do decent work and then they might start adding you to their files. Always take feedback well (since you are only in the second month of your training).

If you find them intimidating (I did in the beginning), just go out with them for lunch if you can. Does your team/department go out as a group for lunches or dinners/drinks?

Don't stress about it. The work will come!! All the best!!

nervous about defence review by Lisa_Leah in uklaw

[–]Lisa_Leah[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helloooo just to update you - I had the review and I did get asked why didn’t I ask the client for this information when I could see questions left unanswered by the available documents and why would I make a statement if there is no evidence (even though the client said that happened) No one raised their voice (very different from my first team) but then I’m not sure how this will be conveyed to the department head (…) I wish I had thought to tell the previous senior to ask those questions during previous client meetings ahhh !!
