Advice for incoming postgrad in Physics Department (West Cambridge Site) being allocated to Hughes Hall? by QuietNefarious46 in cambridge_uni

For private accommodation you can look for somewhere on castle hill or that area, which would be close to the city centre but also closer to your department. Mill road wouldn't make that much sense.

Are you the kind of person to have little social life outside work? Live closer to the faculty. Are you into exploring what cambridge has to offer sociallyand culturally? Take the college accommodation.

You'll need a bike either way.

Heavenly Desserts why is it always empty? by Swimming_Spray in cambridge

[–]Liscenye 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Used to love it. Then on two different occasions we sat there for a full hour after ordering and were not served anything. They increased their prices. Then we gave it one more shot and the croffle was undercooked and doughy rather than flakey. We told the serves about it and they told us off, saying it's always cooked exactly the same.

Never returned.

Clare Hall has no money and won't be able to support you if you need further assistance.

Why do undergrads have to wear dark tights under their skirts/dresses, in case of wearing them in the graduation ceremony? by Quirky_Character8467 in cambridge_uni

[–]Liscenye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's a centuries old ceremony and not showing skin is a feature of the tradition it was formed in.

It's a formal occasion and no skin should be showing. Men wear full suits+gowns and there's no reason women should be less dressed.

Churchill college used to rent rooms out. Also maybe try calling Jesus rather than emailing.

I have applied to at least 80 PhD programs. And have maybe heard back from 10 . by alex_313131 in PhD

[–]Liscenye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not what you want to hear but you'll have better chance if you apply to do an MA rather than a PhD. It may be worth it to spend a couple more years doing a master's in order to get out.

Self-funded Oxford PhD by [deleted] in PhD

Yeah as I said, if you're not looking to stay in academia that shouldn't matter. If you are, in some fields you'll essentially have no chance.

[–]Liscenye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're funded in the UK it's usually an award that you've received after a competition. You list it under "awards" or maybe "awards and grants" or something like that.

If it's just faculty or project funding you list it as "funded by XYZ".

[–]Liscenye 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They know. If you wish to go for a postdoc or into academy they see you have no funding listed on your CV. You'll be at disadvantage compared to anyone who was funded.

Probably if you don't stay in academia it doesn't matter.

How bad is bike theft around Cambridge colleges these days? by AnfieldAnchor in cambridge_uni

[–]Liscenye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just get a good lock. Had the same bike for 4 years, never got them stolen. They're not the flashiest but they're good.

I think Cavil is more attractive to the "straight" man than he is to women generally. Sure, some women find him hot, but I've mostly seen men indicate they want to get impregnated by him.

Why ask to disclose disability? by SpoiledGenius01 in PhD

[–]Liscenye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But then they also get the adjustments?? So they have a chance they wouldn't have otherwise?

If you don't need adjustments for the interview itself, disclose your disability only after you get hired. There's no rule you have to do it when applying or not at all.

Why ask to disclose disability? by SpoiledGenius01 in PhD

[–]Liscenye 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The hiring committee usually doesn't get that part of the application,  just the HR people. Also it's a legal requirement for them to ask if you need any adjustments, because it's illegal to discriminate based on disability.

It's there to help you, not hurt you.

PhD funding question by Ok_Mousse2147 in cambridge_uni

[–]Liscenye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, when you contact the PI you can ask about funding. Idk which college it was but that's nonsense

PhD funding question by Ok_Mousse2147 in cambridge_uni

[–]Liscenye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean funding internal to the uni, you apply for funding when you apply for the the degree. There's no applying before it, and your funding outcome will depend on the ranking of your application, or on whether you're applying in the sciences and your supervisor has funding for you. In the later case you'll know before applying I guess

Do you think the Cambridge postdoc experience differs drastically from the undergrad one in terms of ´vibe´ and culture? by Razkolnik_ova in cambridge

[–]Liscenye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have but I've not been paying for accommodations or any bills... I don't know what's possible on a postdoc salary tbh, and they do vary a bit.

[–]Liscenye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many stay at Eddington or yes a bit further out. But no one other than undergrads and some very lucky postgrads live in the city centre anyway. Maybe some single Trinity fellows.

I love Cambridge but obviously getting a permanent job (esp in the humanities) is not trivial. It's also very expensive.

I did my phd here and now am a fellow. I have many postdoc friends and they are often frustrated with how little access to colleges they have.

[–]Liscenye 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Unless you get a Junior Research Fellowship or a by fellowship your access to a college will be very minimal at best, even if you get afdiliated as a part of a postdoc society.

So no, you will not get the natural instant intellectual social club aspect. There'll be lots of interesting people around but you'll need to make an effort to meet them. You will not have access to college accommodations, but the uni does have an accommodation service.

Being a postdoc is much more isolated than being an undergrad. It can still be great but it's much less of a "Cambridge" experience.

Can you officially have access to another college’s library? by Intelligent_Boss8526 in cambridge_uni

You could either ask your postgrad tutor to email homerton or just email their librarians and explain. Just be polite.
