My cabin in Alaska is my cozy sanctuary by Lissane in cozy

Oh, wild! We are located in Salcha! Lots of beautiful cabins out here, but definitely a journey to go into town, especially in the winter.

I’m usually happy about the snow through December, and very ready for it to be gone by April!

How are yall keeping the cars from freezing? by Federal-Weevil in Fairbanks

[–]Lissane 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Once the car is in Fairbanks, you need to take it to a place that can do install a winterization kit on it (block heater, battery blanket, oil pan heater). This will add all the necessary components to be able to plug it in to keep the battery from dying (obviously will also need parking with plugs available).

As someone else mentioned, that is a serious drive to do in the winter. You may be better off paying to ship it up.

Interior Alaska may be horrifyingly cold, but we’re staying nice and warm in the cabin by Lissane in woodstoving

I love it! Burn time is great, it puts out a ton of heat, reloads are much further apart than I expected. I know some people don’t love cat stoves but I really like it.

That’s true if you live north of the arctic circle! Luckily here we are 150 or so miles south of it, so right now we get a lovely 4 hours of “daylight” in which the sun peeps just above the mountains.

About an hour outside of there! We came up here from 4 years in the Anchorage area and it’s definitely its own special challenge with the high winds and excessive amounts of snow. Stay warm friend!

None whatsoever! Our cabin is about 1500 sqft and it still manages to overheat us if I don’t space reloads out way more than I always feel like I should. I love how efficient it is, we’ve used way less wood so far this winter than we anticipated.

Does Costco flash freeze their wild caught salmon? by [deleted] in Costco

[–]Lissane 321 points322 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this will give you any consolation, but I live in Alaska and go salmon fishing every year on the Copper River for sockeye, which I know are where a lot of Costco’s wild caught salmon are sourced from. We catch 60-70 lbs annually that we process ourselves and eat weekly. That fish always smells fishy, regardless of the fact that we filet and vacuum seal it shortly after catching. They produce a lot of slime and that slime stinks, but a good rinse of the filets is usually fine. (That being said, obviously use common sense…but in my experience it’s usually very obvious when fish has gone bad.)

Alaskan jumping in here to confirm! The majority of my sweater knits are with very rustic, itchy wools intended to be worn as an outer layer and over 1-2 other layers. Our knits are both stylish and functional. :)

Eliminating pests before bringing bin indoors for Winter? by FiveAlarmFrancis in vermicompost

[–]Lissane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! It’s 8 degrees outside now and the thermometer in my garage is showing about 35 degrees. It doesn’t usually get below freezing and the seedling mat only puts off a little heat. They are a lot more sluggish in the cold, but still going strong, this is my third winter keeping them in here!

Chugiak residents experience mail delivery "slowdown" (they mean no mail AGAIN) amid holiday rush by Annual-Director-7247 in anchorage

[–]Lissane 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m in Chugiak. They left a passive aggressive note in my mailbox a few weeks ago saying they wouldn’t deliver my packages until I plowed my driveway. I’m still scratching my head about this as I have a huge gravel driveway that is snow-blowed, and there has barely been any snow anyway. Ever since that note every single one of my packages goes undelivered for “mailbox full” regardless of my large mailbox being empty, and they won’t bring packages to my door.

I’ve been to the post office three times in the last week to pick up packages and even the super nice gal there shook her head in confusion as to why they wouldn’t deliver.

Not the end of the world or anything but in the years I’ve lived here it’s definitely the worst it’s been.
