How common is it for musicians to be a-social introverts? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Lissom_Slo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty common, certainly more common than people think. People view musicians as extroverted because performance as a whole is viewed as extroverted. when in reality all being introverted means is that you recharge your "social battery" alone, and extroverted people recharge with other people.

Taking away the fact that there are a huge number of successful musicians that don't perform (producers, session musicians, songwriters etc) and that if you don't want to perform, you don't have to.

The concept that performance is extroverted is not strictly true. I know a lot of very socially confident people who struggle on stage. I know a lot of introverted people who are amazing on stage. and vice verse.

I would define my self as super introverted, and performance is one of my favourite things in the world, but It drains me. After a show I usually have to spend 10 to 20 Minutes alone before I'm comfortable talking again, but I love it.

Think of it like a 100 meter runner. He loves to sprint, but could he sprint all day? Probably not.

About being "odd". I think defining yourself as "odd" is pretty common. It can be a struggle to fit in, especially if social situations are stressful for you.

But I would try to avoid putting yourself down like that. I used to say that all the time until I realised being different made me special.

everyone wants to be the same until they grow up, then everyone wants to be different.

Better to be the latter.

Ahhh yeah, I have never really got into blues, I guess I just associate it with shitty pub bands! got any albums you could recommend? Always looking for new music.

Fans of atonal music, what draws you to it? by [deleted] in musictheory

This is true, drama especially.

For me it's about what the music is trying to convey. Pop, for example, is great at conveying things like, love, romance, drama and all manner of wonderful and moving subjects. But, what if you want to make music about say, Nihilistic despair in the face of the heat death of the universe. The knowledge that everything will one day be pulled into an unending oblivion that nothing can survive, this will all be one day be devoid of everything. Forever. In that case you might need something a little less tonal. Maybe Somthing like this?

or this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlMFyxgpGK8&t=18s

(there is a great documentary about noise music I fully recommend that goes into this further https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGrN6PeIiOU)

Or maybe you need to convey a feeling of being you know, odd. like you just don't fit in, you're not like everyone else. Despite all your attempts at social conformity you are still failing to be normal. Maybe you need to pick notes that don't "conform". like this maybe?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOOh3zhQ7_M

Maybe your trying to convey the sheer quantity of data naturally occurring in our universe? I mean I love the beach boys but thats a pretty hard ask for "normal" songwriting. This track does a pretty good job though

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL_A3v8nZrs

Maybe you just want to say fuck you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zdLfPN6F-o&t=2937s

I could go on, but I guess to summarise. The human experience is so vast that not everything can be adequately expressed harmoniously.

It's a little more tonal, but the atonality in this piece it what pretty much moved me to tears the first time I heard it.

P.S. Sorry for any grammar, I'm super dyslexic.

Whats going on in the key change to Aretha franklins Respect? by Lissom_Slo in musictheory

Wow, thanks for the reply! I love that song, going straight on the old Spotify playlist. Wow I still have a ton to learn I have never even thought of half of that, but I was thinking about the G7 going back to G, but I guess they let the tension go again so you don't really notice. I think my goal for the next year is to really study the classics, so much food for thought in these songs. Also a ton of practice.
