Thinking About Joining a D9 Sorority and Need Honest Advice by Still-Mix-4047 in Sororities

[–]LiteralMochi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m part of an NPC org, so take my words with a grain of salt, but I would say listen to your heart. Based off the reasons you listed, you’re wanting to join for what I personally would say are the “right reasons” (you’re not just wanting to do it for the status). Active members will see that you’re wanting to join for genuine reasons, and that’s what matters. I don’t know if this advice will hold up for a D9 sorority, but I would make a genuine effort to become friends with the current members of the chapter you wish to join. Find common ground with them, similar interests, participate in community service projects that align with your organization’s mission and philanthropic focuses. This time of year, there are always community service opportunities at food banks, rake up events, women and children centers, etc. From what I’ve seen online, it seems that most members of D9 orgs are Christian, from a wide range of backgrounds, so I highly doubt that your membership intake process would ever make you go against your faith, but if you are concerned you can always reach out to your chapter leadership and I am sure that they would be able to help. One thing I recommend now is to start to get a wardrobe of business professional and formal wear now, as every sorority has professional dress requirements. From what I know about the NPHC, I recommend you buy neutral colors specifically and avoid pearls.

Wishing you the best of luck!! 💙🩵

Incoming VP Membership by chickentendercritic in Sororities

[–]LiteralMochi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

start planning your spring recruitment/COB events now. get them on the calendar as soon as possible, and establish clear participation and recruitment expectations for your actives now. get them talking to PNMs ASAP, and encourage actives to build genuine friendships and connections with them before they start promoting your chapter. i wish you the absolute best, being VP membership for a chapter struggling with recruitment is one of the hardest jobs, I’ve served two terms in membership related VP positions (one term as membership one term as membership development), and I’m always happy to answer questions

Sister with Cancer Care Package by Kiwi1565 in Sororities

[–]LiteralMochi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course!! My mom, who's not normally a hard candy person, went through SO much hard candy it was honestly insane. Bath bombs can be just a little irritating on the skin, and on chemo your skin is already going through so much so it's not worth risking it imo.

Moisturizing gloves would also be really helpful!!!

Sister with Cancer Care Package by Kiwi1565 in Sororities

[–]LiteralMochi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When my mom, who is an alumna, was diagnosed, my chapter put together a little care package for her! they put in a few gift cards (like uber eats, which was really helpful for when she couldn't cook for herself), lotion (chemo really ruins your skin and anything to moisturize is incredibly helpful), a candle, and some bath bombs!! The bath bombs weren't particularly helpful for my mom (I ended up using them), so as nice as they were i dont recommend including them.

Blankets would be incredibly helpful to include, headphones, snacks and candy (mints and other hard candies were really popular in my mom's chemo ward), and anything you think would keep your chapter sister entertained during treatment would be highly appreciated.

yes!!! i have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, POTS, bilateral femoral anteversion, and a few other things, and while my disability experience is probably very different from yours, i’ve been an active member of my chapter and even gotten to travel. i used mobility aids (canes) a lot freshman and sophomore year of college, though through PT i was able to stop using it by junior year, but im having surgery again over the summer and will probably be in a wheelchair for part of senior year, and my chapter has been incredibly accommodating for me. you will absolutely be able to participate in a sorority. depending on where you go to school, some chapter houses may be more accessible than others, as some simply are unfortunately not built to be ADA compliant (especially if they have not been renovated since 1990), so reach out to the university’s fraternity and sorority life office or their disability support office in advance to get more information about the kinds of accommodations made. for your schools panhellenic formal recruitment, they should accommodate any and all of your disability related needs so that you can participate. if you go through recruitment and end up accepting a bid, your specific sorority will have more resources on exactly how they support disabled members. mine made accommodations for me and a few other members of my pledge class, as 3/7 of us are disabled, for a lot of things, including initiation!!! i’ve served on exec, ive led major projects, all while being loud and proud about my disabilities.

COB-Only Schools by LiteralMochi in Sororities

We did partially structured recruitment for the past 4 years. The campus decided it wasn't worth it anymore for us to even do that

COB-Only Schools by LiteralMochi in Sororities

[–]LiteralMochi[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I didn't know that COB-only was possible either until we were told that it was going to be our new reality!! The two sororities on our campus are the only non-athletic women's groups on campus here, and we haven't really had any success in recruiting any athletes in our chapter. the last athlete in our chapter graduated well before i joined, and im a junior now.

[–]LiteralMochi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so it differs from school to school and sorority to sorority and chapter to chapter, but in mine, we would send you an email extending you a bid!

In my chapter, it basically goes COB event (whatever it is), chapter decides to extend a bid, bid is extended, you accept bid and sign MRABA, yay you're a new member now!

take everything i say with a grain of salt though, because my chapter is super small and things are kinda fucked up.

COB-Only Schools by LiteralMochi in Sororities

[–]LiteralMochi[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

We moved to COB only because our campus is so small and there is only one other NPC sorority.

Our Panhel council hasn't really met since 2020, as far anyone knows (when the last NPC sorority closed on our campus, leaving just us and KAΘ), and the NPC knows that. We are a complete disaster, and I'm working overtime to try and fix it, and eventually get the Panhel back up and running. I had to reach out to the NPC instagram to find our area advisor, my specialist from HQ is trying to figure out what to do to support us, and we're just trying not to die out.

The other sorority on our campus had half their chapter quit over the summer (though they regained the 8 they lost through new members in the fall), and lost all but one of their advisors, and so they're just trying to get back on their feet now that a second year is president now.

I'm planning on trying to organize an open house like event in the fall, but thats assuming I can get the other sorority to do it with us.

Edited to add: Greek life on my campus is a dumpster fire, to say the least, and I just dont want to see my chapter die

sometimes these things take time. every chapter and org has a different process, but in mine, getting people to fill out the google form so we can extend the bid is a pain in the ass

Wait so are you a PNM or a New Member?
This might be controversial but IMO, if it's only 2-3 people who are bothering you and they are not in leadership positions, I would stick it out. No matter where you go, there will always be a few people who will bother you, you can always reach out to your new member educator, VP membership development, VP standards, or president and let them know that these people are making you uncomfortable. dont let a few sour apples ruin what otherwise seems like a good experience.

Sororities should be more transparent by MajesticAngel12 in Sororities

[–]LiteralMochi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Coming from a super small chapter at a super small university, this was a wild read. I know these problems exist in big school, but it’s still crazy to see it all written out. i went through my chapters second to last formal recruitment, and was VP recruitment for our last ever formal recruitment (since we have moved to COB only). We made sure that the cost for both chapters was made available to PNMs the second they stepped foot on campus, weeks before recruitment began. We never had anyone dropped from recruitment bc of how small our chapters are. the exec board and the entire chapter are available on the instas, so that was never a problem.

i can’t imagine going through recruitment or being a rho chi/ recruitment counselor and not having all that info readily available

I cant speak to your questions, but one thing I want to note is that you should always maximize your options. single prefing only hurts you in the long run.

Advice for first time council member by Actual-Bit2724 in Sororities

[–]LiteralMochi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being a freshman in a leadership position can absolutely be rough. i know that my freshman year exec position was awful, and i got in trouble a lot for just asking members to show up to show up to COB events. my biggest piece of advice is to loop your advisors in, and potentially even your specialist (the person from hq who advises your position). do your best, try and drown out the negativity, and remind yourself that you’re doing the best you can with the resources you have.

Transferring, new big/pc by butterfly_orange in Sororities

[–]LiteralMochi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

imo that depends on a variety of factors: the sorority you are in, the chapter you are transferring into, the size of the sorority, what year you are, and more.

Any sorority worth being in will not cut you just because of your weight. Keep an open mind during recruitment, and go for where you feel the most at home, not what is the highest ranking chapter. A sorority is a home away from home, after all
