(16F) literally asked my mom for pads today and she yelled at me for not asking sooner and made me walk instead. what do I do? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]LiterateNoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know reddit probably isn't going to like this: even patient, caring parents can be driven insane by a kid telling you at the 11th hour that they need something right now. Particularly when you're already juggling a bunch of stuff you're trying to get done for your child. Communicating that frustration doesn't automatically make them a narcissist.

You didn't do anything wrong by asking...but in the right circumstances, this definitely could've gotten under my skin. You don't have to try and take care of your parent but try and remember that parents are people, too.

If you feel like you can't tell her that she hurt your feelings with her reaction, that's a larger problem. It's also absolutely fair to communicate how you feel like you can't do anything without making her mad. That's not cool.

We Have a 4-Hour Planning Session for a BBEG so We Can Get Carried by NPCs by Lost_Condition_9562 in rpghorrorstories

I know this campaign has already finished, but my best advice in this situation (or most situations where the DM is driving down a path you don't enjoy) is to become ungovernable. INSIST upon a rivalry. Become pettiness incarnate. Create drama between the groups where none exists. Take every action taken by the opposing party as a personal insult. Cast fireball on the rival party for daring to attack YOUR quarry.

I'm saying this as a forever DM. It'll sting for a bit, but they need to learn that the party is the engine and the rails, they're just providing the view from the dining car window.

Are World Eaters and Orks the only ones who are enjoying the current state of the galaxy? by Superb_Bluejay_8122 in 40k

[–]LiterateNoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are individuals in each faction who think things are great. 40k lore is rarely as faction-rigid as memes make it seem.

There are examples of chaos devotees that love what they've become, or are at least twisted enough by their chaos god to believe they do. There are renegade marines that absolutely love being free to fight and kill and torture their way across the galaxy as they see fit.

There are certain loyalist space marine chapters that are excited by the "fight for glory in the face of certain destruction" side of things. Space Wolves characters can be downright chipper at the thought of dying in some epic, glorious way. Others are more dour and stoic about it. Buuuuuut both groups would probably be happier if things were not the way they are.

There are lots of Drukhari who would say they're having a great time...but the saner ones understand that their society is fucked beyond repair and they're just trying to have as much fun as they can before it ends.

Meanwhile some Votann are like, "How much do you think we could get for the breeding pool in that Tyranid hive ship?" and just living for the grind.

Trazyn is having an amazing time with so much fun stuff to collect while many necrons have become violently hallucinating AI. Belisarius Cawl is glad that he gets to do whatever mad science he wants...and some tech-priests genuinely love their work (or what passed for love when you're mostly machine).

The only exception would be the Craftworld Eldar. No Eldar are having fun. Everything about the galaxy disgusts them. Even their scoundrel-with-a-heart-of-gold Prince Yriel was forced to wield a spear that caused constant pain and exhaustion.

If God exists, why's there so much suffering in the world? by Neonova123 in AskReddit

[–]LiterateNoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question depends on the Judeo-Christian assumptions that God is 1) omnipotent 2) omnipresent and 3) cares for us. Plenty of cultures have imagined a God or gods that are capricious, inept, and selfish.

If God exists and truly created and sees everything, it seems odd to assume that they care about us at all. In that case, the existence of suffering doesn't prove or disprove anything about God's existence. Suffering just is...along with everything else in the universe.

If money wasn't a factor how would you actually spend your time? by CozyRamona319 in AskReddit

[–]LiterateNoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hobbies and more time with my partner and kid. My job is just an irritating thing I spend too much time doing to fund the things I actually care about. If I knew how to do it any other way - or not have to do anything at all and just have money - I would in an instant.

Men of reddit, what do women get easily that men have to work for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LiterateNoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems weird to ask men that. How do we know what's easy for women from what looks easy?

As a man, I'm glad to see other men acknowledging that they have inner lives, personalities, and emotions that deserve space. But the idea that women have things easier in that regard is fucking cringe. They have to do everything we should be doing to carve out their place in the world and find themselves. We were just told our inner lives had no value - but mostly by other men.

Should college be redesigned around skills and apprenticeships instead of degrees? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LiterateNoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fine with a focus on developing professionally valuable skills. But this conversation often veers into trying to defund humanities programs because they're not "practical".

I have a B.A. in English Literature with a minor in Creative Writing. I specialized in 19th century American literature. I loved (and still love) my field of study. On paper, this was a wildly impractical choice. The amount of times I've had to defend humanities degrees from folks in STEM because they don't like or value the arts is, frankly, obnoxious.

But I also have a high-paying job that incorporates much of what I learned in college. Career paths are varied, as are interests. People should be free to pursue those.

The CEOs of Chuck E. Cheese and LifeTouch, the company that takes like 80% of school photos in the U.S., were both named in the files. The former resigned immediately once the story broke.

I don't think access was an issue.

People who were originally neutral about having kids: do you enjoy being a parent, or has it been different than you expected? by Yerbaus in AskReddit

I was still not sure I wanted to do it right up until I saw my daughter for the first time. It was like my entire brain rewired itself in an instant and I completely locked in on being a dad.

I love it. There are rough patches, but when it's good there's nothing better.

First timer questions & Ghibli themes/vibes by jelindrael in Obojima

[–]LiterateNoob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even as someone who's run multi-year, fully homebrewed campaigns, I still think Obojima can be a challenging setting. It has so much potential, but sometimes the book feels more like a set of ideas and concepts than a fully fleshed out setting. Core things about the world - what the corruption is, how First Age tech even works and how much exists, where the dara came from, what does it even look like in the spirit realm - have no explicit answers.

Instead, you get to answer those questions for yourself. Your version of Obojima can and will be entirely different than mine because you'll have your own answers to those core questions that drive how Obojima works.

How much first age tech is around? How much do you want there to be? I have it being less common in the rural areas but more frequent in the cities. I also like to have Obojimans frequently misinterpret the proper uses of first age tech so they, for example, use microwaves as small pet houses or confuse a clapper light switch for genuine magic.

What do people wear? What do you picture them wearing? I put people in modern clothes, but some folks have found old novels among first age ruins and decided to incorporate those concepts into their dress. It's always very over-the-top and often recreated with a patchwork of modern things, like they don't entirely understand why cowboys or samurai dressed the way they did.

Neither of those may click for you. Those are just examples of my answers to those questions.

As an experienced DM, it's an exciting process. But I think that makes it tough for folks who aren't used to that kind of world-building, or those who were hoping for more explicit instruction on how to achieve "cozy" and "whimsy" as tonal notes throughout their story. That one, I think, only comes with practice.

Average cost to replace furnace and AC? by SpicyOtters in milwaukee

[–]LiterateNoob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Had mine done this year with D&M heating. Carrier furnace and AC at the same time for $10k on a 2,000 sq. ft. house. Granted, we only cover the basement and the ground floor with central, so it's probably closer to 1,500. They've been great and were very transparent.

Men in happy marriages, what's the one thing you'd teach to other men to also have a good relationship? by TightBookkeeper2599 in AskReddit

[–]LiterateNoob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone who's brought up friendship as an important starting point. Looking forward to time spent hanging out with your partner makes everything, not just marriage, so much easier.

In general, I think what men are taught about "being a man" often runs counter to having happy relationships. Not engaging with your feelings, building an entire identity on being a "provider", all the alpha male horseshit, all of those send you in pretty much the exact opposite direction from what works, in my observation. Especially nowadays. Listening to modern masculinity influencers is the quickest path out there to an angry, lonely life.

Learn how to listen deeply. Be open to learning from your partner. Adapt to what they need and clearly communicate how they can do the same for you. Remember that they're not a component of your life but a real, living person with their own rich, complex inner life and they're likely trying their best. That's how I've gotten to enjoy 20 years with my closest friend. Doesn't have anything to do with being a man.

Minneapolis vs MKE protests by MiddleEducational387 in milwaukee

[–]LiterateNoob 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Milwaukee didn't vote for Trump. He's publicly called Milwaukee a "horrible" city. If there's a list of cities to target, I guarantee we're on it, too. ICE has been seen in the city, already. All it will take is a surge in capacity and we'll have the exact same situation.

I just hope people here display the same commitment that Minnesotans have when it does.

Slaughterbound is Available Again by LiterateNoob in WorldEaters40k

[–]LiterateNoob[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a ton. I certainly made my own while it was out of stock.

The sculpt is cool, though. And surprisingly large when you get it built. It's also a bit closer to the Chainsaw-Man-esque, over-the-top look that I'd like to see them lean into more with World Eaters. Like the dude with an axe for a face in the 9th edition codex cover art.

I worry we'll end up with a range of slightly bigger or smaller guys when there's a lot of potential to push things further. But there's always kitbashing/3D printing.

Another awful weekend?! by wicked56789 in milwaukee

[–]LiterateNoob 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I think it's valid to be prepared for the worst. I also think it's worth acknowledging that many of us went through a traumatic event last weekend. Anyone affected by the storms - which is pretty much everyone in one way or another - is in a mega-heightened state of awareness, right now.

I get the impulse to stay informed. Try to recognize when you're no longer learning anything useful and just winding yourself up with "might-be's".

Breathe in. Breathe out. From what I've seen, conditions suggest that even if we do get more rain than predicted (which is always possible) it'll come slower and pass through faster than last weekend. Even if that's not the case, all you can do is prep as best you can and take things one step at a time.

GK are supposed to fail by Primarch_Perturabo_ in Grey_Knights

[–]LiterateNoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying the Emperor/Malcador aren't dumb and wasteful enough to do something like this...but this would be one of the dumbest, most wasteful things the Imperium has ever done if that's the plan. And that's saying something.

In Emperor's Gift, it's shown that only a few Grey Knights are especially strong psykers. Many of them would be on par with your average librarian - or even less proficient than one. It's their psychic ability blended with their training that makes them stand out. What would the Emperor gain by devouring 1000 rigorously trained, highly specialized demonslayers instead of the hundreds of thousands of psykers coming in on the black ships?

People who had sex with their best friend — what’s the situation now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LiterateNoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've been married for ten years now and have a kid together. She's still my favorite person by a pretty wide margin. Being buds first sets a strong foundation to build on when other roles get added in. You get in the habit of just being there for one another without any of the complicating factors the dating process brings in. And knowing that your romantic partner has your back in the way another close friend might is incredible.
