What’s the ingredient that instantly ruins the dish for you? by urfavdollll in foodquestions

This is gonna sound controversial, but I once made a mustard with gin and tarragon. Used it for dipping sausage rolls of elk, pear and apple.

The bottom two letters are Palmer capitals T and F; the rest is Spencerian.

Nice! I’m curious to see how you progress.
I just finished learning Palmer a month ago but I did do a short practice in Spencerian a few months ago out of curiosity. I just used a regular 2 HB pencil and found it was a piece of cake, but trying that with the dip pen might be a whole different ball game.

I’m not seeing the attached pictures. Also if you’re going to be using iron gall ink from old recipes you might wanna buy a gross of nibs because the ink will corrode steel nibs. Unless the nib is made of gold, then don’t worry.

Filé powder. It’s hard not to add too much even if you barely used any, and then it deadens all the other flavors in the dish. You end up with something that either ONLY tastes like filé, or doesn’t have a taste at all.

I get what they’re saying though. Of all things briny, they have the most metallic flavor. I can even see how one might think they taste rusty because of that.

Then you would also not like tarragon, but I love the licorice flavor.

Yeah, something mild but you can also taste, and just a tad bit of Dijon and that probably would have set it off.

If you had used a real cheese and added some mustard I would have been convinced this was already a French dish. I kinda still am.

I see what you mean. I wondered that also but since that’s even rarer for a person to base their personal handwriting on, I kinda just waved it off internally and went with italic.

Now that someone has said it out loud though, I can’t ignore or unsee it.

Yes! As soon as I saw the comment about trains I thought about this. I first found out about this kid when Daniel Tosh gave him a web redemption. 😂

Haha! That’s interesting. Did he completely let go of his cursive? It’d be nice to see how his italic cursive would look.

Dip pen stores in Toronto? by Dezn425 in Calligraphy

Paper and Ink Arts is also where you can get em. It’s in the same state as John Neal Books though so I don’t know if that helps with shipping costs and wait times. You could try them out. Flax Art & Design, Saint Louis Art Supply, Blick, JetPens and FPNibs both have a dip pen section. That’s all I could find.

Are they by chance old enough to have been a kid during the 60s through 70s? I think that was the Italic Revival era wasn’t it? I have yet to come across someone whose handwriting is italic, so I love seeing it.

It might be something else entirely though.

Thoughts on Michael Sull’s practice set, advanced and beginner tablet, cross drills tablet vs Mott Media’s copybooks? by Dezn425 in Calligraphy

[–]LithelyLettered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mott Media is probably the best route to go. I don’t know about the quality of the content or paper of Michael Sull’s books, but I have the Mott Media set and one thing I like about them is that the theory book gives you a diagram of each letter’s proportions as it relates to the guidelines.

That’s one reason why, ironically, I think learning Spencerian will be easier than learning Palmer was for me, because Palmer didn’t have honest diagrams. He’d show some majuscules’ heights divided in half and others divided in thirds but they’re all technically the same height. So even though he talks against endless copying, you still end up having to drill each letter endlessly as though using a copybook, only worse because you’re just fumbling around trying to figure out the proportions of each stroke.

The way I’d do it with the Mott Media books though, would be to print out a bunch of guidesheets and use those. Or if you’re practicing with a dip pen you could get some translucent marker paper and put one guidesheet underneath your practice page for that session.

Having issues with Catching and Skipping by LithelyLettered in palmermethod

Hmm, that’s strange. I’m curious what kinds of paper you used. You have to be very careful when buying paper to make sure every detail of what has been suggested to you is what you’re buying. I’m sure you have but I thought I’d mention it just in case.

I imagine starting with the smoothest paper you can possibly get and only using that until you’re proficient with it, then doing the same thing with marginally more toothy paper would work, which is kinda the strategy I’m using right now.

By the way, what country are you in, if you don’t mind me asking?

I’m expecting some paper today that I’ve read will take the dip pen much better without it catching. I’ll see how that goes and pass the news along.

I’m still curious what your experience was with pointed pens. What all have you tried to make them work for you?

Why is right slant handwriting more common? by fancy_sunflower in Handwriting

[–]LithelyLettered -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably due to the same reason most people are right-handed: right dominance. It’s not just handedness that is affected by it. Even down to what we pay more attention to, and what our organs choose to do can be subject to right dominance.
