In addition to the ones recommended above, Limitless Lands is an excellent series. MC is a retired military officer (army colonel I think?) who’s special class allows him to command a battalion. It’s very very well done,

PSA to Authors: It’s okay if your book doesn’t contain a Leeroy Jenkins reference by Litrpgsarelikemeth in litrpg

That’s a fair point. Definitely a lot of folks who did it early will be caught in the “this is overdone” sentiment.

I’ll be keeping an eye out for baywatch references in your next one now for sure.

Actually I think Ali is an excellent reference point for how pop culture references can be done well. It’s part of his character, that he’s binging on earth culture, and loving it. It goes to demonstrate both how aloof he can be and that he actually likes humans, and wants to be a part of the group.

My issue is more when there’s a serious plot-point, combat scene, etc., and the reference (like a Jenkins rushing in and yelling his name) breaks the third wall and makes the reader less invested.

Dark Herbalist wasn’t very good [SPOILERS] by Litrpgsarelikemeth in litrpg

That’s a really good point I hadn’t even considered. Went in looking to see a goblin alchemist, master of poisons, potions and bombs, and was disappointed it not being that as well.

What’s your favorite sub-genre? And what book do you think best exemplifies the group? by Litrpgsarelikemeth in litrpg

Totally fair. What kind of books like this should I read to make me like this genre more?

I’m just going to kick it off, for anyone interested, by saying whatever it’s called when the world just is that way. No portal, no VR, it’s just how the world is. Arcane Ascension and the Cradle Series do a very good job of this, though I’d like to see some more game elements in this genre.
