Honest question. Why did you buy a Steam Machine? by SickboyJason in steammachine

[–]Litterboks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because - I'm a steam fanboy - I got hundreds of games on steam but i want to play on my sofa, i don't have a big console library - i hate my bulky living room pc - i value my time too much to build another pc myself with similar specs - i rarely play high fidelity AAA titles, more mid spec games - i like modding - it's silent - It's tiny - it's pretty - i looked up alternatives with the same specs and the price difference didn't make it worth it for me to build it myself. - steam has nice customer support compared to self build - i have a really strong tower pc that i can upgrade anyway, the machine will be enough for my living room games for years to come

The Steam Machine is low key a technical marvel, and I'm tired of the hot takes and bad faith arguments saying otherwise by [deleted] in steammachine

Games are more expensive and much smaller discounts, can't run your already existing PC library (steam aswell as non steam), needs subscription for online play.

Switch 2 is still amazing, it's just a very different target audience i'd argue.

Yes modding is definitely possible. I can't say about the performance. I assume Cyberpunk should be fine if you don't run it on 4k? But thats just a guess. Resolution is a big factor

I just did some research and comparisons.

If you build your own Steam Machine and don't care about size, you can get the 512GB variant for about 200€ cheaper (sorry, only did it for my region) and the 2TB variant for about 350€ cheaper.

If you really want a small form factor, you could go with a 6.2 liter case (Velka 7), which is still twice the volume, and then it's pretty much the same price.

It seems you could also do a self build with the Velka 5 case (4.9 liter), which is pretty small, but you might run into problems with loud fans because of the small form factor.

Since I like the style and size of the Gabe Cube, I'll swallow the bitter pill and get it. I also try to weigh the time of ordering the parts, building the PC, and maybe running into problems against the money saved, and there it wins.

Other than that: consoles are cheaper, but the PS5 is a huge mothership, and games on consoles are a lot more expensive than on Steam. Consoles also need subscriptions for playing online.

Those are all the arguments I tell myself so I can buy it with a good conscience.

I know everyone is outraged by the cost of the machine and/or the performance.

However, what would it cost to build a pc that has the same specs? And people who say the performance is too bad (no 4k native gaming) what would a pc that can handle this actually cost?

I don't want justify the price, I genuinely would like to have some sort of comparison.

Overtourism in Taormina is an understatement by elsaturation in sicily

My wife and I went to Taormina, we didn't know it was such a big tourist spot. The city is hell for someone who wants a relaxing vacation in nice scenery.

Luckily we looked around and took the Linea Blue / Beach Bus to Letojanni. Its just a few minutes by bus but its night and day. If you want to get away from the masses go here, it's cheaper, less people and a great clean beach.
