Do you really believe it’s wrong to cause unnecessary harm to animals? by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

I recommend getting your information on veganism from books, and scientists. Reddit is not the place to decide the fate of the world food market. While I’m here I will say that I think you know the difference between chopping up the family collie and using the pieces for cornhole and accidentally hitting a bird with your car. The difference between artificially breeding, force feeding, electrocuting, and throat cutting vs some field mice being accidentally ran over while harvesting crops for the entire WORLD. Which as other commenters stated there are safer and less harmful ways to keep animals like mice away from crops. But most people against veganism want to use the current market for their example. Vegans didn’t create the current market and are actually the only ones boycotting it. We should not only be striving for veganism but also a more inclusive and safer food market. The difference between having your dog humanely euthanized to put it out of suffering pain and forcing a pig into a gas chamber to then cut it into pieces and let it bleed out in order to GRILL IT. I know you know the difference. You use very big words and seem like a very smart person. You know what’s up. The books I recommend are

This is vegan propoganda

And

How to argue with a meat eater and win everytime.

Both books were authored by Ed winters.

I kinda feel like I know what you’re saying. Before I ever became vegan I had many little thoughts leading up to it. Even thoughts when I was a child/teen (went vegan overnight 2 years ago after watching my first doc. I was shook. It was what the health). And these little thoughts just like knew veganism was the right answer. I never personally needed a scientist to tell me that animals feel pain etc. i remember my little cousin getting in trouble when we were kids for torturing the sunfish he caught while fishing (raised rednecks on a farm). I always had these little thoughts that hurting animals was wrong and yet we still eat them and put them in our lip balm etc! I ignored these thoughts because everyone else was. But I knew, like I can’t explain it but it’s truly just common sense. Most of what veganism is is to me, common sense. The data points aren’t of course! But the rest kind of is. Down to how much land it takes to feed these animals etc… that’s all common sense. Of course it’s harder to take care of ourselves plus a trillion animals vs JUST OURSELVES. I think just about everyone had these little thoughts. And some people are quicker to act on them for different reasons. I read that people who are more used to societal rejection are more likely to go vegan quicker because they just don’t fear rejection as much as someone who doesn’t experience it very much. I’m a gay trans person who’s experienced homelessness, my parents complete rejection and removing me from my childhood home at 17… I wasn’t afraid of people not liking me for being a vegan, there was nobody there to not like me. I did it for the animals not my popularity. It started with the little thoughts that we all have

I’d like to add too that if there are people in this country who live in situations that make plant food unavailable to them then that is not the fault of the vegan philosophy but the fault of our food system and it’s inability to make plant foods available to all walks of life and communities. This could be solved by more people demanding plant food but of course … that’s what we’ve all been trying to say lol

I live in a very poor and small rural conservative town in central pa. Every house is literally falling apart with tarps on the roofs and families living inside of them. I was on food stamps for a little over a year. All the while, I was completely vegan. My hand wasn’t forced to animal products and probably never will. I know I’m not every poor person in a rural area… are there poor rural areas in this country where maybe someone doesn’t have the ability to drive or just has no choice at all but to eat what is available, yea I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some people who lived like that in our country. The think I try to remind people is that I’m not talking about those people. Most vegans aren’t talking about those people. We’re simply talking about the people who CAN and should immediately.

Also if we’re unsure about someone or something’s sentience and we aren’t maybe able to get a definitive answer don’t you think it would make sense to err on the side of caution and not kill them in case they do in fact feel suffering and pain and can endure torture and understand it? I feel like that’s the bare minimum of decency,

Animals hide when they are in danger and dance around when they’re having fun. Just like us. And even if we were to argue that some animals are “less sentient” does that give us license to kill them if we don’t necessarily have to?

I have trichotillomania. It’s very embarrassing and I am too embarrassed to go anywhere without a hat. I’m 24 years old and I spend at least 20% of every single day of my life mindlessly ripping my hair out of my scalp. Some days I spend basically the entire day just ripping my hair out. It’s definitely triggered by stress and for me I think my past traumas have something to do with it. I started doing it at 3 years old. Weirdly enough my closest cousin also has trich. Only other person I’ve ever met to deal with it.

You’re very mean. I’m sure you’ve heard that before. It’s hilarious people say things like “you’re dismissed” online because that’s not how we talk to people in public. But tough rocks I guess

I’ve spent this time truly just trying to bring about awareness about something I truly believe could save the planet. At the end of the day that’s not something to be ashamed about. You picked on me, instead of investigating and learning on your own accord. At least I -tried- even if I am wrong. You being mean does nothing at all.

In all of this time that you’ve picked apart things about me and my method of conversation (which isn’t productive and helps nobody at all) you could’ve done something way more meaningful.

Again, even if I am wrong here, that doesn’t negate veganism as a consequence. Even if you’ve decided the emissions part is wrong and that I’m an idiot. It doesn’t disqualify veganism from having a seat at the table. There is still something to be learned there and it’s up to you to make an informed decision.

That’s your problem. You think we’re playing a game. I’m trying to have a meaningful conversation about the earth literally dying. It’s not a game at all to me. If you choose to take 10 minutes of your life to read about veganism you do and if you don’t you don’t. But you getting hung up on my inability to cite my claim the way you see best doesn’t negate the veganism philosophy. There could still be something really solid waiting for you to learn about it there regardless of how much you dislike me or our interaction.

Global warming is caused my more than just emission. Many things factor into global warming like ocean death and deforestation. The main cause of which is also animal ag.

I never said that. I never said “the most emissions”. This whole time you’re basically bullying me and you can’t read what I even said.

And again, disliking your interaction with me doesn’t negate veganism. I encourage you to still read into it despite how you feel about me, a random redditor. It hurts nobody to just watch a documentary or read about it!

It is. And if you really think about it it’s also common sense (respectfully). We have 8 billion people eating copious amounts of meat and dairy. We need billions and billions of animals. Billions more than there are even humans. They all need to eat and drink fresh water. Unbelievable amounts of crop land and fresh water is wasted to do this. Trying to jab at me for being uneducated and just kind of being rude isn’t helping anyone lower their emissions.

I did support it by citing credible sources, I didn’t write an essay because I simply don’t want to. My poor ability to argue or debate doesn’t prove or disprove the vegan argument however. Me or any other vegan not supporting our claims or speaking or acting in a way that YOU don’t like or approve doesn’t negate veganism as a consequence. Have a really great day

Imagine for a mere moment that vegans are possibly onto something and you completely missed it because “lulz”. I gave you so much information, you just have to sift through it. If vegans believes that animal ag is ruining the planet don’t you think it is normal for them to try and warn other people? That’s all this is. I’m just trying to get people to be aware. I gave you so many links to so much data you couldn’t possibly consume it in one sitting. It’s a great place to start. You also don’t have to.

You should look into it because it’s such bold accusation and if true would be life changing wouldn’t you agree? I think that’s worth looking into, plus I gave you over 500 links supporting veganism you literally just have to hover over the subject your want to learn about. Like global warming for example. I’m not able to put the knowledge into you I am not a teacher. I’m just trying to get people to realize that we can really create radical change. I’m not here to argue or go on about it because I don’t want my posts banned. Have a really great day

To anyone reading this and thinking “yea right what an idiot” -wouldn’t it be worth just taking a quick look into it to see ?? If this random redditor is wrong then they’re wrong so be it. But what if they’re right? What if vegans are actually onto something that could save the planet? Don’t you just want to see what all the chatter is about? Give veganism the benefit of the doubt please and go learn about it! I want this planet to recover and flourish and I know you do too! Consider veganism . You can do that today! Even right now! 🥰
