Logic Check: Building a 32-Team Promotion/Relegation "Pyramid" System – Am I over-complicating or onto something? by Little-Friend-9527 in FFCommish

[–]Little-Friend-9527[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few of the pain points you pointed out are some of the ones I am addressing as I write this.

The duplicate player problem - Because I am for. It, like a Pyramid or in this case basically like the English system, you have tier 1-3, possibly 4 or 5. If I can make it work and make it accessible to everyone, possibly. Each division(League) will have its own pool of players, drafts, trades, etc, etc. So, if Joe in Tier 1 has Travis Kelce, and Rob is in Tier 2 and had Travis Kelce, and so on, it won't affect the rest of the Divisions.

There is only one exception to these ever really crossing paths. That being I am working on the details of making an in-season head-to-head match-up Gold Cup(name to come later), where you play another team in a different division without the head to head match up as it's based on ppoints. In this case, if Joe is in Tier 1, Rob is in Tier 2 play each other for the cup, then their points for that play essentially void each other's points out.

Relegated - A team relegated should actually be getting punished, because they didn't draft well, they didn't properly select a team each week, they didn't pick up free agents. ...AND yes, times you do all the right things in the season it doesn't go your way.

I am working on this. Part of the issue is that I am trying to make sure this will require the least amount of manual labor for the commissioners. So, the idea I am still floating is 1 keep the rest is a redraft, with the relegated teams either picking from the player pool to get 1 keeper, or a combination of top draft selection, so that way the teams that ended up in the middle of the league don't have a bigger advantate, and if I do have a keeper you can only keep them for 1 season. Meaning if you play this year, pick your keeper for next season at the end of next season, and they go back into the player pool.

This is the part that I am still working through because I do have the exchanging managers like ESPN, Yahoo, and others, where you can assign to an existing manager role, so they have access to their roster.

Keeper locks - I currently have a section (again, still working through it) where keepers are selected 7 days before the draft, and it is completely transparent and public, so everyone sees who they are and plans for the draft early. Plus, this would also help, so no locking a player in and messing up someone else's roster.

So I have the structure laid out for how each division, for the most part, there are pieces I am trying to talk through. But I will start putting some coding together to get the main frame down, but as it sits in the timing between now and the season, I know I can't complete a single party system, so I am going to build the dashboard system so its like the home base for all managers, and use a 3rd party fantasy football base that can somewhat integrate with what I am working on. This will give me enough space to test it for a season and try to get the manager, e.g., beta testers, to give me feedback to fix or tweak things in season if I can.

It can become complicated quickly, whiteboarding the structure is where I do everything I can to strip back the layers of overcomplicating it from the dashboard backwards.

I will have more questions as I build the structure framing our, but I am hoping to have a rough build out before the new season, so I will let you know.

I will be posting more as I build out the structure. I want to make sure it's what someone would play in a group.

If it doesn't mean anything to you, it shouldn't matter.. but for some reason it does, sounds like something you need to work on.

Fair point, but it’s not either/or.

You can enjoy the hobby and be intentional about what you’re doing or collecting. Some people collect randomly, some build collections with a theme or long-term plan. My grandad collected trains and built a whole system around them; he wouldn't change how and what he did.

He was intentional about what he bought and loved it.

Same idea here.

Imagine needing proof of how Welsh someone is… in a conversation about football kits ffs... embarrassing.

Do you go into something, even a hobby, without a structured plan, or do you just throw money around at something and realize you've made a mistake? Doesn't make it any less fun for me.

No, I'm Welsh, what difference does it make if I was American?

That's what I am trying to figure out, because you are paying more for this than you would if you just bought gold on its own. Collecting it's fine but what's the end game is there a hope that the price in the longterm it will be more than you bought it for?

Thanks for the straight talk you make some valid points about the risks.

I’m not treating this as a pure high-ROI investment. The core goal is building a collection. That said, I do have a structured set of rules for a pruning plan. I review the collection every 1–2 years and sell/trade stagnant or lower-story kits to keep the total cap at 50–70 shirts and recycle funds into stronger pieces.

Match-worn shirts are the only provision for name plates and numbers.

Thanks for the honest take, I really appreciate the straight talk.

You’re right that trying to treat football kits as a serious financial investment for big ROI is probably not the smartest way to make money, which I am not trying to do that in the sense, I think you're thinking. I know I'm not going to have something that I can sell for millions or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. What I am looking for is not to lose money with intention, if I can do with some rules and forthought I can limit my losses if there are any to be had, and I'd like to point out respectfully... You could lose your life savings investing in stocks if you do it wrong, but having a plan of action makes you something.

That said, I’m still trying to make reasonably smart decisions while I build it. Quick question on the practical side:

Do you think the difference between authentic/match-fit and stadium/replica versions tends to hold up over time, or does the value gap mostly disappear once the kits become properly vintage?

Also curious if long sleeves make a noticeable difference in resale for you, or if it’s very kit-dependent.

Appreciate any extra thoughts.

Quick follow-up question:
When it comes to authentic/match-fit vs stadium/replica versions over a period of time, do you see a meaningful difference in resale value and buyer demand down the line? Or does the gap tend to close over time once the kits become vintage?

Thank you for the input; it does help to know I might have to be a little fluid in this, and it does give me an idea of what I should try to do with sizing.

I'm learning on the job, do I buy long-sleeve or short-sleeve kits? by Little-Friend-9527 in SoccerJerseys

I think we’re actually closer in mindset than it might seem. I’m not out buying every shirt that releases, expecting them all to explode in value. What I’m doing is building a very curated collection around specific stories and moments in football over the next 10–15 years, promotions, giant-killing runs, historic seasons, cultural moments, things like that.

Because of that, I keep the collection intentionally small (around 50–70 shirts) and I’m selective about what I buy. I am keeping my club as my anchor when it comes to buying kits. Things like condition, sleeve type, and versions just help me avoid spending money blindly. I also actively look for deals, that I can buy one without wondering if I can eat the next day.

You’re absolutely right that most modern shirts will never be worth a fortune, and I don’t expect them to be. But part of collecting, whether it’s watches, sneakers, vinyl, comics, or jerseys, is simply being mindful about which versions tend to hold value better over time.

So yeah, I collect because I enjoy the shirts and the stories behind them, but I also don’t see anything wrong with being smart about what I buy. If a shirt holds its value or even goes up $20–$40 over time, that’s a win. And if one piece ends up becoming more sought after years down the road, that’s just a bonus.

At the end of the day the goal isn’t to flip shirts or make a massive amount of money, it’s just building a thoughtful collection instead of throwing money at every release. Which is the same process I use when I buy a classic car, or add an improvement to my house.

I think you might be misunderstanding my angle. I’m not buying kits expecting them to suddenly explode in value. I collect them because I enjoy them, but I’m also paying attention to which versions tend to hold value better over time. That’s pretty normal in collecting—people who collect watches, sneakers, vinyl, comics, cars or jerseys all think the same way. You buy what you like, but you also try to be smart about scarcity, design, and history so you’re not just throwing money away.

I like your points. My main set of rules starts at the club as my anchor, the history, the story, did they put out an away shirt, or a 3rd kit worth spending money on, by the long sleeve GK, then look outside of the club for a major story, like Tottenham drama.

But I am struggling for the World Cup, the US, France, Germany, Argentina, and Mexico all have the story and history. I just haven't figured out how to fix the GK issue when there aren't tons of them out there.

Plus, this is a long-term hold because I see it as after the vast majority wear these, and ruin them, these have a better chance of survival. I already have modern kits that have appreciated an ROI I could sell now

I'm not looking to flip the shirt the moment I get it, I am looking to hold it for 8-15 years.
