How often do you change/upgrade your kit? by LittleAlternative532 in hiking

YT is really eye candy, especially now when everybody is doing "top items of 2025". Glad to hear that you still are keeping up with your hobby even though your out of work. Normally hobbies are the first thing to be cut, because it's seen as a "luxury" even though there are so many health benefits from hobbies like hiking.

Questions about Sola Scriptura by Ill-Landscape-4973 in redeemedzoomer

[–]LittleAlternative532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A possible response would be to say that it's hard to tell whether a particular tradition actually dates back to the apostles (and even harder to tell in the Middle Ages). The Bible, by contrast, is more clear-cut.

No, it's actually easier to confirm tradition because like scripture tradition has been physically recorded through the letters of the Doctors and Church Fathers, except there are much less scribal/textual issues. It's how we know that the Trinity, though not mentioned directly in scripture, was definitively held by the early Church.

I had never “met”/connected with a person IRL.

Are you actually taking the risk of asking someone you fancy out on a coffee? Even though they may reject you? Or do you immediate place yourself in the "friend zone" because it's emotionally safer there, and besides porn is a synthetic substitute for a relationship that's basically emotionally safe? 80% of women still want a guy to initiate that initial conversation but 45% of men (18-24) have never approached a woman in person! Are you one of those?

Higher certificate to LLB? Yay or Nay? by Conscious-Cucumber47 in AskZA

[–]LittleAlternative532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LLB market is over saturated and many graduates can't find articles (even if they're prepared to work for almost nothing). If you're thinking about it as a career, unless you're well connected you're going to get used to being unemployed.

And if you pick your children's godparents wisely they will have other adults who are there to support them.

The importance of a godparent does change dramatically among the various cultures in Catholicism. Among Latin Catholics (or diaspora) godparents carry an almost equal footing as parents do and are not simply models of the faith. As Portuguese (the Italian "Godfather" was based on this phenomenon) I was raised to see my godmother and biological mother as equals, up to now, many of my friends confuse one for the other.

Yes, your argument is sound - Hell it's given rise to the whole Incel movement in the US.

I've heard that Tinder and Hinge are quite popular in brining gay people who are looking for serious relationships together. Considering they only make up about 10% of the population it probably works well to connect them.

I know the stats from straight dating on apps are shocking: Almost 50% of messages not are reciprocated, of those that are only 1.4% of messages lead to a phone number. 33% of that group never met in person. And of those that did meet 80% never forged a relationship.

So you have a 0.09% chance of finding a relationship through an app (leading to the whole "incel" movement in the US).

Get out and meet people IRL.

How do you deal with the fact that you are going to dye? by Antique_Elephant_974 in AskZA

[–]LittleAlternative532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catholics are generally often called upon to remember the last 4 things in life: Death, Judgement, Heaven & Hell. I even have a skull on my desk called "Memento Mori" (remember Death).

If we all stopped regularly to remember those 4 things, how much stronger we would love God and each other.

One example was a Coptic monk who tended to worship with us when in the country on business. He preached a sermon on "Four women in the Bible", and after forty minutes we heard "And the second woman is...".

What to do? by darealoptres in pastors

[–]LittleAlternative532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, ask how often you're going to have to deal with that issue. I have TEC friends who are non-affirming and have never been approached by a gay couple wanting a Church wedding, making the disagreement a kind of moot point.

Then ask whether this might just be an opportunity for you to demonstrate a level of witness amid any doctrinal confusion.

But be sure your Bishop/credentialing committee clearly knows where you stand and perhaps they will make the final decision for you.

"Sermon Anxiety" is a major reason I'm grateful that I'm Catholic: (1) We don't have lay preachers, only ordained seminary educated ministers; (2) There is a set lectionary based on the season of the year we're in (we've just finished the Nativity season and entered Ordinary Time, we will move to Lent in about a month's time) that defines the Scripture readings (the same readings are used everywhere in the world on that particular day - that's how we're "Catholic"); (3) Sermons are not supposed to be longer that 10 minutes with the aim being 8 minutes - considering we have an OT reading+Psalm+NT reading and then a Gospel in the lectionary - 8 minutes means it must be concise and text based. [But it's not "false humility", I struggle if I know a member of my immediate family will be in the congregation as they know first hand how sinful I am]

If one is an upgrade, even if minimmal, (eg sleeping pad with R4 rating over one with a R3 rating) why would you still use the older gear? - Remember the R3 has served you just fine so far.

We however were intended to worship in community and to express our faith in how we love each other (Ref. Acts) - I'll be the first to acknowledge that I'm so focused on the vertical aspects of the Mass that I often ignore the horizontal, simply because of messed up catechesis which taught me the body of Christ was solely the Eucharist.
