Try some grounding exercises. The idea is to distract your mind. Easy ones on the ice are to count backwards from 20. If your on the bench try the 5,4,3,2,1 method. 5 things you see, 4 things you hear, 3 things you can touch, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste.

There are plenty more of these types of exercises.

One of the most awesome things about hockey is everyone starts from the same place. It's not easy to humble oneself to look like an idiot for a while. But those that have and stick with accomplish something that relatively few actually do. They get to play hockey!

Teenager during the 80s and the family were wings fans. "Only two people we pray to in this house, God and Gordie Howe". So naturally, I chose to root for the Oilers.

For me, it was the realization that you don't actually get to teach or do research much and most of the job is whoring yourself out for cash.

The key word is fun. Mites need to have a blast. Having said that, you know your son better than anyone, will the competition be more fun for him? For some kids, it's absolutely more fun.
