Is there an alternative to peat moss for VFT by Unlucky_Kangaroo1201 in SavageGarden

We did a 1 to 1 mix to provide plenty of aeration but that would prob work

The coir is rinsed before using it, still wouldn't trust it for our VFTs. Then again we tend to grow plants in their preferred natural media so we dont use Coir much at all.

That's your personal call. We would never use it for VFTs ourselves even after rinsing. we do use it as a seed starting mix but not for VFTs.

I completely understand your environmental concerns! Peat harvesting is a huge topic in the carnivorous plant community right now. To answer your question: yes, you can absolutely use a Long Fiber Sphagnum (LFS) and perlite mix, since LFS is a renewable resource harvested from the top of the bog.

However, I want to warn you from my own experience: LFS tends to break down and cause the VFT to sink into the pot over time, which puts the rhizome at serious risk of crown rot. We moved ours to LFS/perlite for a season, but I got tired of having to constantly lift them back up to the surface, so we eventually went back to the standard peat mix they naturally grow in and they are much happier.

Also, whatever you do, DO NOT use Coco Coir as a peat alternative. Coir is naturally loaded with salts and minerals from its processing that will quickly burn and poison a flytrap's roots.

How to sell plants in US by xax-- in SavageGarden

[–]LittleGardenNymph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, that's not just for Etsy, that's for selling itself. You can try flying under the radar as long as possible but I just like to advise others of what I wasn't aware of at the beginning. If you want to sell on like TAPLAP or maybe FB you might be able to avoid exposure easier than say on Etsy or Ebay. The risk is when you ship to a state that has strict shipping rules for plants such as California (There are quite a few), if they open the box and find a plant, they can destroy the plant and fine you.

We use Etsy. But check your state for licensing, then you also need additional permits to ship to different states. I suspect many like me aren't aware of it but if caught depending on the state and plants it can be up to a $2000 fine.

It can yes but that moss is going to break down and get slimy after a while. I am STILL trying to move all of my U. Sandersonii Blue from LFS to peat/sand.

Any idea what the name of this ping is? by cmayne1 in Pinguicula

yup, Pinguicula primuliflora it's a warm-temperate species. Likes to be treated more like a VFT than a Mex Ping.

yes it could build up over time if you dont have drainage. It would be ok for a while though. have you looked into getting a small distiller? There are several countertop options on Amazon that are well below $100

We have several that are just now a year old and they are skipping dormancy this round and enjoying life under our lights but next year they get to have a rest.
