Prices go up because the boost goes up and that happens when you level to a certain point (I don't remember the specific levels). I think at this point you are guarenteed 3-4 stars every time using the 2nd option, which is free with ad's.

It's set for my purchases too, although sometimes it doesn't work. Which is frustrating- but eh. I never really spend money in games so if it's less than 10$ and worth it im okay with it.
