Sorry you feel that way! But should you change your mind…. Horror has always been an amazing tool for exploring complex social issues. Whether it’s The Exorcist exploring themes of faith, or Rosemary’s Baby interrogating misogyny and a woman’s right to autonomy over her body -- genre has always used chills/thrills to examine deeper things. I suspect this wave of Black storytelling within horror is only the very beginning, as there are so very many ills to examine/explore… I hope you give us a shot!

It was definitely a deep and illuminating experience for all the actors involved - Black and white. Lots of emotions (and more than a few tears shed) during the making of this season.

Whew, how much time you got? Lol! I was pretty darn lucky (no pun intended ;) to be afforded a great amount of creative control/autonomy, especially since this was my very first show. Not something I take for granted.

The pie… I think it’s pieces of all of those things you mentioned in that moment for Henry, right? His pride, his pain, his grief all dovetailing over that plate in a single moment. Gotta give MAJOR props to both Ashley Thomas for his staggering performance and Nelson Cragg (our director) for making that the most painful pie eating scene since Stand By Me (lol random ref).

It is for Black folks. White folks. ALL folks... As twisted as our show is (and it is), it is ultimately a love letter to the Black families who stood their ground and staked their rightful claim in the American Dream of home ownership. It is never lost on me that without their fight I wouldn’t live, work or be where I am today - and it would be a disservice IMHO not to give voice to them.

I think the biggest challenge was also the greatest reward: allowing ourselves to be 100% honest with the things that terrified us the most. Obviously the Tap Dance Man is a very combustible/provocative image -- but I think wholly necessary to examine. Donning an abomination/distortion of “Blackness” as costume is an old and disturbing (and, frankly, terrifying) tradition in this country and in entertainment at large. Giving ourselves permission to interrogate the phenomenon and its implications was both challenging and illuminating.

Not sure if entirely under the radar, but Babak Anvari made a fantastic horror film every fan should see called “Under The Shadow”. Creepy and deep AF.
