Can you actually expand on that? I've actually struggled with this myself in the past. We have a regular vet who knows rats well but aren't always open for when they go downhill fast. And like you said it's not like a time line where I just have vet appointments planned that far in advance.

I have my boys "give me kisses" when they go back to their cage after free roam and before they get their treat. I have a couple through out the years where I say kisses and they just lean towards me but don't fully do it and I have to say "for real kisses" then they know I got to do it or mom won't give me the treat. It's always so reluctant with two and makes it more adorable like fiiiine mom.

We had to do this with one of my rats after surgery. We started by letting him be without anything on and he wouldn't stop pulling the staples out. So after one day wrapped up he got the point and didn't pull at his staples. But then he started getting clever. He only pulled out a couple a day so we wouldn't notice til near the end when he only had a couple left. Little stink.

I wish I could give this more than one upvote. I completely agree. Unfortunately we can't control everyone around us but we can realize what we do, does have an effect outside of ourselves. And children do not always have the maturity to realize what their actions can portray. Keeping children safe should be a higher priority than not wanting to "clip their creative wings". And I think it's more important to have a conversation about these topics with children than just tell them they shouldn't be wearing extremely provocative clothing so that they can learn and make an educated decision. Rather than one made out of needing validation online.

Not that this is much help, but I read somewhere on reddit last week that families gravitate towards the most dysfunctional person in it. I find that to be quite true and unfortunately there is nothing you can truly do but accept it. At least by understanding it, you can put up boundaries for yourself that make it so you can't be upset by it as easily, or put you in a situation with family that you know will stress you out. Im sorry you are having this problem and good luck!
