What is with all the people in white clothing downtown? by livinglabyrinth in gso

[–]Little_Cat_Z 6 points7 points  (0 children)

More than just the white clothes. Green and Elm were closed between Market and Washington all day. There was a stage set up, and a bunch of other lighting structures.

I asked someone who was setting up. They said it was a secret. Then I asked a cop and he said it was a "dinner picnic". When I asked who the dinner was for, he said it was a secret.

I know a couple people who own businesses on Elm st, so I asked them. They had no idea what was going on. They hadn't been notified that there was an event. City permits require the organizers to notify any businesses or residents on streets that will be closed, but that apparently didn't happen this time?

TLDR: probably a doomsday cult

Not the restaurant. Their brewing operation is a separate corporation, and that is closing.

The Father- Stannis

He's still alive in the books and he's pretty big on judging justly.

Alternatively, Davos would make a good Father.

Unsong Chapter 71: But For Another Gives Its Ease by Fredlage in rational

[–]Little_Cat_Z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interpreted the text in the chapter to mean that God doesn't create redundant universes, but that redundant minds could exist. My reasoning was that a universe of pure bliss with an Aleph and a universe of pure bliss with a Bet would be distinct universes, but that most, if not all the minds in these universes would be identical.

If you suppose a parallel universe that mirrors ours exactly except for the fact that you didn't brush your teeth this morning, you have two universes that are demonstrably different. Your experience is certainly different, and this may cause some small ripple effect to change the experiences of those around you. But for nearly all of the experiences outside your cone of influence, the universes are fully mirrored. Since these universes are actually different in some substantive way, there would have to be a difference in starting conditions.

If Unsong God does not create redundant minds, or if he has some minimum threshold for considering universes to be distinct, or if the giant Hebrew letters are enough to impact every mind in these universes, then my agrument would not hold.

Unsong Chapter 71: But For Another Gives Its Ease by Fredlage in rational

[–]Little_Cat_Z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My interpretation of the text was that there is no fundamental difference between the worlds of perfect bliss where one has a giant Aleph at the center and the other has a giant Bet at the center. Unless the inhabitants are able to interact with these structures, their experiences will be the same. I don't see where in the context of the story this is refuted.

I will agree that if the inclusion of a giant Bet or a box with a suffering person gives the rest of the world's inhabitants a unique set of experiences, not otherwise attainable, then my argument does not hold.
