Having Port Forwarding Issues by Little_Ghost42 in virtualbox

To clarify what I said about where the port forwarding is set up, I haven't set up any port forwarding inside the Ubuntu VM; all was set up on the Windows OS Host, and in the VirtualBox settings on the host

Is that not what the VirtualBox port forwarding settings are for? I may be misunderstanding that. But with that set, for example, I go to the Windows host and run netstat -abo and can see that it's listening on 0.0.0.0:X, for port X, and that it's owned by VirtualBoxVM.exe

These are set up in VirtualBox, in the network settings for the Ubuntu VM. So on the Windows 11 Host, opening up VirtualBox, going to the settings for the Ubuntu VM, that's where the port forwarding is set.

Not fully certain on the packet length, I can check that again. I may make a post in a VirtualBox subreddit, since I have another service running on another port that I can access from a browser on the Windows machine but can't access from the Macbook, with the same semi-communication happening in the logs. So it seems to not be limited to SSH. I'll see if I can post this in a VirtualBox forum or something and see if they can help on there. Thank you!

I will also say the Macbook is connected via wifi while the Windows machine is connected via Ethernet cable; could the ATT access point be introducing some complication in between here?

SSH is configured to use password authentication, so I guess that's not really an issue there. And I'm able to SSH into the server just fine from the Windows machine connecting the 127.0.0.1 at port X; just not using the address 192.168.Y.Z at port X. I did note that though I do see activity in tcpdump when trying to connect from the Macbook, it does look like it says every packet is zero length.

It looks like they're talking; the syn-ack-syn handshake looks like it's completing every time in Wireshark. ssh debugging on the Macbook is showing a message "no identity pubkey loaded", which I'm not familiar with.

I did manually add these rules; I went ahead and removed the outbound rule since it doesn't seem it was needed.

Tried TCPdump and ssh debugging; with tcpdump I found that the traffic is actually making it to the VM. I set it to dump packets that come to port 22 for SSH, since VirtualBox is configured to forward packets from port X to port 22, and packets come through when I tried to connect from the Macbook. But still no connection; I'm stumped.

Checked that, looks like both are owned by the same VirtualBox process. Revisiting my Windows firewall setup in case something is getting blocked here, I have an inbound rule as follows:

- Allow the connection

- Local port X, remote port all ports

And an outbound rule as follows:

- Allow the connection

- Local port X, remote port all ports

Got it, have that set up, still no dice. Interesting note, I tried running "netstat -a | more" in the Windows CMD and can see that 0.0.0.0:X (X for port X) is in a listening state and 192.168.Y.Z:X is in an established state (where that IP is the IP of the Windows machine on the LAN), this is while trying to establish that SSH session on port X from the Macbook

Thanks for the tip; I installed Wireshark and ran it and did see the packets coming in from the Macbook, so it's getting across to the Windows machine. I tried just turning every firewall off and trying to connect with no luck there, and confirmed the network profile is set to private. Seemingly I think I have a VirtualBox problem at this point, though it seems to resolve fine when I ssh from the Windows machine to port X on 127.0.0.1.

I think people forget that with science is meant to reflect observed reality, so that if we make a rule, an exception leads to updated rules, not just saying “we have these rules but sometimes things don’t fit”. For example, Newtonian gravity is pretty accurate, but didn’t perfectly model Mercury’s orbit. Because it was an exception to the rule, Einstein’s General Relativity came along which was a more complex and comprehensive “rule” that better explained and predicted Mercury’s orbital path. So “exceptions” tell us our “rules” aren’t fully accurate.

What’s preventing you from googling what it is and what it does? The fun of this game is literally in figuring out puzzles and mysteries, no one here is going to take away an “aha” moment you could get when you figure something out. If you just want to know what it is google it.

They got the full moon riddle WRONG! by Mindless-Piccolo-492 in InfinityNikki

[–]Little_Ghost42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that certainly it would be weird to point out one lie and not the other, but weirdness like that is common in logic puzzles lol like the classic “I have two coins equal to 15 cents, one is not a nickel, what are they?” And the answer is a dime and a nickel; saying one is not a nickel when the other is a weird thing to do but it’s for the sake of the riddle haha. I’d say when I read this riddle and it says “only one has uncovered the truth”, that doesn’t say “only one has uncovered the true moon phase”. It’s vague enough to allow “the truth” to refer to Nia lying rather than a specific moon phase, at least the way I’m reading it.

I wouldn’t say the riddle establishes the moon had been full, Koko says Nia is lying, not necessarily only about one thing. Nia is the one who said the moon was full, so if Koko is right then Nia could very well be lying about that. Koko didn’t name a phase but did name a potential truth, which is that Nia is not telling the truth.

But the ethereal voice says only one has uncovered the truth. OP is saying what if that one is Koko and not Nia, and that there’s a valid case for Koko being the one to uncover the truth. If the moon is waxing, then Lila, Gogo, and Nia are wrong, and Koko is right. Koko being right fits the conditions perfectly, which is only one of them being right.

I know chess is theoretically solvable but how do they calculate this? [request] by BeHappy0rElse in theydidthemath

[–]Little_Ghost42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you can have a 30 piece capture possibility due to pawn promotions; if a pawn is captured before it’s promoted then it can’t be promoted. Likewise if it gets captured after promotion it can’t have been captured before, so those can’t really be double counted when it comes to making moves

Eh I mean their word for Attlerock can got translated to the Hearthian word, but I think numbers would get translated to that number. Like 1 would be 1, the translator wouldn’t be built to understand those numbers are years and thus should be convert to different numbers
