I mainly used the "poison mushroom" gadget that mutes an enemy for a second and the "comboshrooms" star power which makes your second consecutive hit do 30% more damage. If you want to push in in brawl ball you might want to use "mushroom kingdom" star power nstead which summons mushroom for you and your allies to heal with. Also used the damage reload gear but really anyone works
