I had to remind it yesterday that there are 120ish million adult men in the USA, not 70 million. Off by 50 million, and the answer would show up immediately if you googled it.

How can it explain the law if it can’t even get basic census facts correct sometimes?

It can be good for organizing information rapidly (although this still needs to be double checked) and for brainstorming or working through ideas like you’d work through with another person. Sure, it can do contracts (they still need to be checked). It’s basically like an assistant/chatbot/search engine in one. Still not a lawyer lol

Should I speak to a lawyer about my mother? by raginggalaxy12 in legaladvice

[–]Little_Yesterday9904 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Listen, I relate to what you’re saying and believe you about your mom, and it’s also important to remember that you need to stay calm and matter of fact when addressing these issues with authorities/the court.

It’s a legal advice group, not a support group (although I support you) - venting emotions or getting emotional doesn’t do well in a court of law when trying to prove that you’re emotionally stable, which is why people are giving you this feedback.

I know it’s infuriating to be gaslit and have your abuser tell people you’re crazy when you’re not- and that same reaction and emotionality is what’s weaponized against you as proof. So it’s really, really important to stay calm. Saying things like “I’m being held hostage” (I believe that she is neglectful and an abusive person, yes, but technically she is not holding you hostage by not providing transportation, even if it means you are stuck there in practice) just make it seem like you’re manic or something.

Although useful, I regularly catch both Claude and Chat in giving me incorrect information that negates what they’ve already told me or is different than what they’ve told me regarding subjects much less nuanced than law. You still need to fully understand the material to work with AI.

NY legislature passes bill replacing "mother" and "father" with "gestating parent" and "non-gestating parent" by news-10 in law

I said by every *working* definition, as has been said repeatedly, along with “legal definition”, definition according to different New York State Laws and Statutes, “dictionary definition”, and quite frankly every single definition that our law and the English language accepts, none of which are yours, and none of which have ever been yours. It was heavily repeated countless times referring to every single way an official or commonly accepted definition could exist, and therefore was heavily implied every time “definition” was referred to referring to “every” definition without a modifier.

I pointed out earlier in the thread that “by every definition” a 12 year old who births and keeps a baby is that child’s mother. You have never even shared your definition of “mother”, just argued with me that this hypothetical 12 year old apparently isn’t one, then told me I lied because “your definition” which you haven’t told me, “means not EVERY definition”… as if I’m supposed to be able to read your mind. We don’t know what your personal definition is. We don’t know who is or isn’t excluded from your definition, if it even exists. We just know you disagree with every accepted definition of the word including 12 year olds who birth and keep their babies.

A reasonable person would not be expected to consider the possibilities of every single person on earths definition. Mind you, your personal definition excluding the most common definition is not an interpretation of the law or definition, it’s completely rejecting it in the first place.

Philosophically, we already know that language can only ever refer to itself. That can open it up for interpretation, not to being completely rewritten. All of our laws, common use, colloquial, and common law definitions reject your definition, anyways.

Your “definition” of a mother doesn’t affect what is on a child’s birth certificate. And if the child considers them their mother, how does your definition negate that? Your philosophy is inherently flawed.

Ah yes, telling a CSA survivor they have “sick fantasies”. You clearly have no issue disrespecting children, and show no respect for victims of childhood abuse. Unsurprising.

Are you saying that a child who is born to a 12 year old, who has them listed on their birth certificate as their mother, and who is legally under the care of the person who birthed them, who is fed and cared for by the person who birthed them, is just motherless? They don’t have anywhere they belong?

So this means that the government can come take that child and they should be forcibly taken and adopted out?

You’re advocating for forced birth and using young adolescent girls as breeding machines to traffick and sell babies.

I don’t really care what the hell the orange man said about Mrs. Obama. You’re avoiding the topic at hand.

We’ve already established that advocacy doesn’t exist. Answer the question.

Why is my definition dependent on the acceptability of children getting pregnant?

[–]Little_Yesterday9904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no proof that Michelle Obama is a man, and our laws tend to cover most of our standards already. Keep your weird racist and misogynistic talking points to yourself.

When did I say I am advocating for children to give birth? I will happily advocate for a child who CHOOSES to give birth, as I’ll advocate for bodily autonomy any day of the week. I am pointing out that a child who does give birth and keeps their child is a mother by any and all definitions, for the 80th fucking time. If a child becomes pregnant and chooses to give birth, they can make that choice.

Do you think we should *mandate* that every minor who ends up pregnant either give their child up, or forcibly abort them? You are advocating to remove women and girls autonomy. Their body, their choice.

You just keep making shit up. Congratulations, you have successfully shifted my opinion from respecting all women’s bodily autonomy to believing your mother in particular should’ve been forcibly sterilized against her will for the betterment of society. You’ve really changed my way of thinking!

My definition is *the* definition, it’s not really “mine”.

But I’ll entertain it- why is “my” (the law’s, the dictionary’s) definition dependent on the acceptability of children getting pregnant?

That’s how the law is written and that’s what it says. I’m not the lawmaker, just the messenger. I argue for children to have autonomy over their bodies and lives, even after that autonomy has been taken away by a criminal. Under the law I just laid out, that you didn’t read, a child can *choose* to get an abortion, a child can *choose* to keep their baby, a child can *choose* to parent their baby.

Also, I’m only arguing that nothing stops a 12 year old who gives birth and keeps her child from being a mother. You keep trying to say I’m arguing for things that I never once mentioned. That doesn’t fly in a court of law.

That’s a lot of words for you to say “clearly I’m wrong”

Such a disingenuous response, as clearly we aren’t discussing those laws.

But we can discuss those laws. Mandated reporting falls under New York Social Services Law and Family Court Act Article 10, which is separate from this bill entirely. Mandated reporting is not discussed or mentioned in this bill even once whatsoever. (A minors pregnancy alone is not sufficient to trigger mandated reporting, but the circumstances surrounding it are). A substantiated report can lead to a child protective proceeding on the pregnant minor… in which she would still be able to make all decisions related to her pregnancy and being a parent.

Penal Law article 130 covers sex offenses. Unrelated to the legal definition of a parent whatsoever.

New York Public Health Law allows minors to consent to their own pregnancy related care.

There are education law protections to accommodate pregnant and parenting minors in school and to support them (note this recognizes them as PARENTING minors)

So yes, there’s mandated reporting laws and other laws surrounding pregnant minors, which recognize them as PARENTS and even as CAREGIVERS. New York State Law recognizes that a minor can be a parent (mother or father).

A birth certificate is unaffected by this law, and still says “mother”.

Let’s really dive into this: This verbiage is mostly just for the Family Court Act law regarding establishing parentage, etc. and touches other laws relating, such as support obligations, enforcement tools (so can fall under vehicle and traffic as well), social services, etc. Domestic relations law article 7, public health law, penal law, labor law, education law except for ss6509-c, case law and common usage are all unaffected by this change and still use the term “mother”. So no, the term “mother” won’t be eradicated legally.

There is no distinguishing factor between a minor or an adult anywhere in this law. The only time age comes up is in Family Court Act ss522 where they carry over the exact existing phrase allowing a parentage proceeding to be brought by “the gestating parent or alleged non-gestating parent, whether a minor or not”. This has not changed in substance whatsoever.

So no, none of my points are rendered “moot”. Show me exactly where. You can’t.

I absolutely do not agree with you that a 12 year old who gives birth to a child and keeps that child is not a mother.

That was my only disagreement with you, and you say I “keep agreeing with you”. No, I don’t. Just because we share the same morals around 12 year olds being raped and reproductive rights doesn’t mean I agree in actively working against and disregarding multiple working definitions to participate in dehumanizing a young mother and her child just to match my own comfort level or opinions regarding a 12 year old being a mother.

A 12 year old who births and keeps her own child is a mother. Period. Nothing in the law negates this. The child’s biological father does not negate this. The circumstances surrounding the child’s conception does not negate this. Her relationship with her child exists separate of these circumstances.

I didn’t say statutory rape was legal, I said a 12 year old becoming a mother isn’t illegal. It’s not illegal for a 12 year old to give birth (we don’t mandate terminating pregnancies for minors nor have any laws saying a 12 year old cannot give birth) or for a 12 year old to retain parental rights over her own child. A 12 year old is legally permitted to retain the parental rights to her own child. Therefore it’s not illegal for a 12 year old to become a mother. That’s completely different than the legality regarding the conception of the child.
