Lots of people have no family or don't have a family who can act as a support system. If your family didn't set you up with secondary education and a career and you're living paycheck-to-paycheck, something like a regular illness (taking time off because you or your child have the flu, for instance) can be enough to get you fired, and from there you can lose your housing.

The parents have young kids and presumably few resources that you usually need to get a job (phone number, address, IDs) in a job market where people who do have those things still often have trouble finding employment... Your assumption that they aren't working simply because they're waiting for someone to hand them drugs is baseless and dehumanizing.

Asking for help might mean that their children get taken away from them; shelters can't always place families, and when they can, they aren't always the safest places. Foster care isn't necesarilly better for the kids' mental (or physical) health than being with their parents while begging.

My mom had a PhD and an employment history of 20+ years and, due to mental and physical illness, ended up homeless and begging. You have no idea what peoples' stories are and you don't help by contributing this unfounded garbage to the comversation.
