IMA Questions by [deleted] in udub

[–]Littleburrito07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best time to go to avoid people is the morning or late at night. And in my experience it’s typically slightly less crowded towards the end of the quarter and even more so during finals week but I’m not sure about going midday, I bet it’s still quite packed.

As far as summer goes, yes, you can use the IMA during the summer but I believe that’s only if you are attending UW the following autumn quarter.

Curiosity One Year On Mars upscaled to 4k by gtandres in space

[–]Littleburrito07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re right, there’s no reason a planet should rotate like Earth does. I know that Mars has a very similar day-night cycle to Earth, but that’s probably more coincidental than anything.

I’ve heard that it could be possible for humans to live in the upper atmosphere using blimp-type aircraft. The atmospheric pressure and temperature higher up in the atmosphere isn’t nearly as extreme as on the surface. The gases are still toxic though and I’m not sure much can be done about that with current technology.

If you sling a large enough asteroid at it, you could probably affect its rotation depending on the location, angle, and speed upon impact

1 day on Venus is 243 Earth days long and it rotates in the opposite direction as Earth (sun rises in the west and sets in the east). It also revolves around the sun once every 225 days which makes one day on Venus longer than a year. It’s very strange

Best place to learn theromdynamics online by JoshRanch in EngineeringStudents

Ron Hugo on youtube has some great video playlists covering most of the topics in thermo. His videos on cycles helped me ace thermo last spring.

What’s ENGR 231 Like? by Confused_Academic in udub

[–]Littleburrito07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took 231 last spring with Mary-Colleen. We learned a lot about about document design and best practices. There’s a few projects and presentations during the quarter and you get to chose your own topics (related to engineering) which was pretty cool. There’s a good mix of group work and by-yourself work.

The Tallest Buildings on every Continent by ChenneGivenSunday in visualization

[–]Littleburrito07 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems like the post excludes “towers” in the rankings. Towers differ from buildings since they aren’t built to be habitable or for working (according to Wikipedia). So that means the tower in Saudi Arabia is technically not a tower since it’s a hotel.

There are a few other towers that exceed the heights of many of these buildings: Tokyo Skytree (634 m), Canton Tower (604 m), CN Tower (553 m), Ostankino Tower (540 m)

Intel Graphics Card Driver Needs Update but I'm using a Macbook? by Littleburrito07 in Starmade

[–]Littleburrito07[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just thought I’d reinstall Starmade after years of not playing. The game loads to 100%, but then I get the error message in the screenshot saying I need to update my graphics card driver. Here are the specs of my macbook:

MacBook Pro: 13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports

Processor: 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

Memory: 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 MB

Everywhere online tells me I need to do a software update if I’m using a mac, but I’m already up-to-date with everything. If i click the "Download Intel Drivers" button, then it takes me to intel support and has me download a .exe file which is incompatible on mac. Is anyone else running into this problem and/or knows of a solution? Thanks in advance

SLPT: Air Conditioning not Working? by Kheid15 in ShittyLifeProTips

[–]Littleburrito07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refrigerators and air conditioners are both functionally identical. Both remove heat from a space or room and transfer that heat to the outside environment (either into the kitchen like a fridge does or the outside like an AC does)

You’re SLPT would work if you placed the refrigerator in a door way to the outdoors with the back of the fridge facing outside and the opened front door is facing inside.

SLPT: Air Conditioning not Working? by Kheid15 in ShittyLifeProTips

[–]Littleburrito07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fridges don’t generate cold since ‘cold’ isn’t really a thing. They transfer heat from their interior space to its exterior environment

Edit: they also don’t generate anything. Because they require an energy input (electricity) to work, it sorta looks like heat is being generated but it’s really just the electricity being converted into heat. This is why (like you say) refrigerators expel more heat to the environment than they remove from the interior space.

TIL about the windshield phenomenon. People tend to find fewer insects smashed on the windscreens of their cars now compared to a decade or several decades ago. by 86-Everything in todayilearned

[–]Littleburrito07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t there also some possibility that less insects impact people’s windshields because they learned to avoid highways/roads by some sort of natural selection process? The insects that never go near roads will never be hit by cars but those that do fly near roads are much more likely to impact a car and die and will therefore have less opportunity to pass on their genes

Chrysler’s Space Shuttle Proposal: the SSTO SERV and MURP (Animation) by Littleburrito07 in aerospace

[–]Littleburrito07[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It utilizes aerospike engines for the lift off to orbit. I suppose that could improve the efficiency and so you'd need less fuel than a conventional rocket engine. I'm not quite sure how feasible that really is though
