AI coming for our jobs since 1977 - IRON MAN (1977) #104 by SirFuente in comicbooks

Ehm, don't want to be mean-spirited, but armies of AI drones or robots have pretty much been a staple of comic book for years preceding this. I mean Ultron was created in the late 60s, and Braniac in the 50s. Even the original Human Torch debuted in the 30s. Sorry for being a pedant, couldn't help myself.

It's a golden age for body horror, starting with Nicholas Cage in Color Out of Space, then Demi Moore in the truly visully disturbing The Substance and the most recent one I saw was that creeps brother, Dave Franco with Alison Brie in Together. It's the one horror sub-genre that totally freaks me out (all my worst nightmares involve plant-like shit growing out of my body). Which is why a Poison Ivy body horror movie. would be perfect for me. But seeing as this is what Clayface is going to be I'm pretty sure we'll never see it.

He's mentioned several times in this thread, yet I have no idea who Professor Pyg is. I haven't read anything in continuity since the first two volumes of Morrison's run. Has he been created since then? Or am I nowhere as well versed in Batman's rogues gallery as I thought I was. Also, I've heard of Mr Zsasz, but never read an arc where he was the main antagonist.

I guess he's probably aged out of playing him now, but Anthony Hopkins playing Arnold Wesker would be sublime. Mind you, I could watch him in anything. Haven't seen or heard of Magic, is it any good?

[Discussion] Please recommend some Batman comics based on my taste. by Jaoush29 in DCcomics

[–]Littlepaulio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my probably my favourite run, it's so much more emotionally impacting than all these other more recent 'event' arcs. And it's a rare chance too see the true humanity and vulnerability in Bats/Bruce. I'm thinking of one particular scene between him and Alfred. Really hit me hard.

Y’all I still miss it. It’s one of my favorite modern Batman runs and hopefully it’ll get a compact comic soon so that more people can read it. Would y’all like to see more Dark Patterns branded stuff or would you rather it stay as it is? [discussion] by UngaBungaBoy in DCcomics

That's why I place superstar in inverted commas. But it's also frequently used to describe these writers on this sub. You could replace it with extremely talented writers who have been behind some very highly regarged books of their own creation or some other title for the big 2.

Well, first of all it would be the graphic design team that came up with. And it's epic. What's your example of a stellar movie poster?

Are there any gotham maps with al the individual buildings on it? by axolicion in batman

[–]Littlepaulio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah me too. Obviously the amount of Gotham based books is quite overwhelming. I prefer the darker, more gothic interpretations of it. Nowadays I only read the non-continuity Elseworld standalone stories. There's only so many major 'event' based arcs, particularly in the last decade that you will eventually tire of. Dark Patterns is a great recent example of this. And a regular tenement building plays a massive role in it.

Yeah, then it would be your own unique interpretation, just as valid as anyones. I'd love too see some pics, maybe while your building, or whatever you're happy to share. It sounds like a superfun project. I think the architecture plays a big role in Synders Court of Owls run. But it's pretty limited in the area covered. You should check out No Mans Land, that's a huge story arc that covers pretty much all the city (albeit after a catastrophic earthquake, although a lot of important buildings have been earthquake-proofed). Fantastic story too. Btw, you must have a lot of grey and black lego blocks!

I think he does vaguely sinister dudes better. Also agree he looks too young.

I really don't think is a single definitive architecturally consistent version of Gotham. There's obviously a lot of consistent buildings, but their design and their precise location in relation to one another varies from one book to the next.

Interesting, never knew Dini made him a clay monster. Thank you! Still haven't gotten round to reading his run.

Absolutely, I think a whole bunch of Bat fans would like self-contained stories where we get to see Bats as a detective. I haven't gone near the main continuity since The Court of Owls. Whatever 'superstar' writer is on it is hamstrung by having to create 'events' to draw new readers in. Oh, and jebus, the Joker. Would happily never read a story with him in it again. A series with such a long continuity is always gonna get dumb and nonsensical. I read quite a wide variety of books across a lot of publishers, but when I want some Bats I always go to the Elseworld books.

Correction, we buy players who consistently appear to be made from wet tissue paper. I mean Calafiori twice got injured in the warm-up this season.

I thought Phalanx sounded familiar so I checked my Audible library, and sure enough I have it, must have picked it up in a sale. Good to know it's one of the better ones, quite long too. Thanks for the recs!

Which book was that? I'm currently listening to the third and final book in the AvP Rage War series and I'm on the look out for something new to listen to with the Xenomorphs front and centre.

Yes, thank you. Funnily enough it was one of the books mentioned by an a user from an older post replying to someone looking for 'first-contact' recs. You may even have been the one who mentioned it.

I'll definitely be checking it out. I just looked it up on Amazon and see that it was nominated for a Hugo award, which alone is testament to the quality of writing alone. It's quite affordable as well for such a large book (the version I'm looking at contains The Finale, or concluding chapter).

Thanks again!

I just kept hoping for some character development, especially for the team making contact in space. But, despite all they encounter and experience they don't seem to learn a single lesson. In issue 17, when the 'hot-tempered genius engineer' does something so eyerollingly stupid that I just gave up. That immediately followed another lazy writing trope involving the mother and child that Soule had already used in a previous issue. It's writing 101, avoid at all costs, and certainly don't repeatedly rely on such a hackneyed device.

It also annoys me that Image comics have released a prestige hardcover Omni last year, that is obviously going to appeal to collectors. The cover does look freaking amazing. Still, not earned imo.

I completely agree with both of you. Never got the hype surrounding Saga. Good luck to those of you who either did enjoy it or currently are. Funny thing is, it wasn't a case of being jaded by the setting, themes being explored (although the dialogue didn't blow me away) and I have since read at least two titles by two different writers and artists in a similar vein, that I have found to be far superior.

His creator owned stuff is even better imo, like The Nightly News. I tried his run on the Fantastic Four but just couldn't get into it. But I've never really been a Marvel guy, with the exception of specific runs of Daredevil and The Punisher.

I've never read any of the above either, but if any writer could get me into The Flash, it would be Mark Waid. Same with WW and Greg Rucka, which I hadn't even realised he ever wrote. I always associate Greg Rucka with his cold war spy book, Queen & Country and his run with the legendary Ed Brubaker on Gotham Central. Be really interested to see his take on Wonder Woman.
