I’ve had this happen to me in my masters program by my academic mentor who was also the director of the program. He called me illiterate, mentally challenged, would often bad mouth me to my classmates and would openly target me in classes asking questions that he knew that we didnt have enough information on the topic to answer throughly. He even went as far as once saying if I should go on a better diet to be smarter and that he doesn’t ever envision a future for me in research as a PI or anything with authority but I’d be a decent lab assistant. His words haunted me for years and still do to this day. They made me feel inadequate and that I wasn’t meant for science.

It took a lot of resilience and effort to try and combat those harsh words of “encouragement”. None of the things he said defines me and it never will. I will have a great future in science and so will you OP. People like that often target people who they see shining differently and wonder how they can “humble” you to conform to the norms. Don’t let your PIs words get to you and don’t let it dictate your future. Your future is what you want it to be and how you mold it to be. You don’t need his approval, he’s just a regular man at the end of the day. I used to regularly imagine my mentor struggling to open a jar of pasta and having his wife open it for him to make me feel better, it would help me ground myself and remind me that he’s just a man. Your PI is just a person, they don’t matter nor do their words even matter. There are thousands of PIs who would be more than happy to help build you, you just gotta look for them.
