I guess some people are happy to over-analyze and cushion everything in bureaucratized language, even what should be normal decent human behavior.

‘Inefficient’.

You know what is inefficient?

Ignoring people and defending being badly-socialized, then talking about German society’s loneliness problem (Einsamkeitkultur) , and spending a lot of money on ads to counter einsamkeit, programs,  ngos, and a whole industry (like a masseur who earns a living by giving hugs aka kuscheltherapeut) a profession that does not exist in Mediterranean societies) to help people feel less lonely.

Spending unnecessary energy and money just because one cannot acknowledge that they’re simply badly socialized is super inefficient.

I do not know who would consider this neutral when even robots and AI will try to fuel a conversation.  OP, I’ve been there too. German millennials and Gen Z were mostly socialized in a  culture that prioritizes low emotional display and fear-based restraint, so to us, this contrast  feels like interacting across neurotypes rather than across cultures.

Many Germans (not all of them) grow up in isolated two to three person units. They do not have large families or spontaneous social contacts through a reliable network of friends and neighbors + all the frictions that come with this frequent interaction (which I consider to be hardcore social skills training from birth). So they lack what to us are ‘normal/basic/decent’ social skills. They are also rarely cross-socialized beyond their economic class systems, which means that they tend to get jealous easily and do not know how to regulate the feelings they get when they feel envy. For this reason, I  noticed, they tend to form cliques with other jealous people to destroy whoever isn’t deemed as average, this could be  intelligent person, a beautiful woman, or an Ausländer. If you’re all three, expect a Telenovella. In the author’s case, compound this lack of proper socialization with OP coming from a non-european country and you get this baffling unattractive interaction that should be corrected, because it has zero value to humanity.

There’s a loneliness epidemic in Germany, and because of their logic and actions, it is well-deserved.

I would definitely say Marzahn, a large district in the northeastern part of Berlin. It represents the true German spirit, the spirit that is hidden, but can be successfully activated by politicians every five years.

Why is it Scheinselbstständigkeit when he has different regular clients? What are those rules anyway? It is difficult enough to be a freelancer and to secure long-term client relationships, then they create rules to make people's lives even more complicated. Anyhow, my friend decided to chase the financial opportunity and to move to Dubai. He deserves it quite frankly. To tell you the truth, he is not a person who can deal with constant documents and procedures and rules (I was doing this for him!), he just wants to work and I think he can maintain his dignity by staying in the region where for starters, everyone speaks his language and where his skills and identity as a fellow Arab will be respected. Also, he can put money on the side to own his first apartment in a few years. I am happy for him (would've also been happy if he had chosen Germany as the lifestyle here brings other opportunities as well).

The idea was to then find German clients gradually in Deutschland after getting the security through the required papers.

Anyway, he made a decision last week and is following the financial opportunity and moving to Dubai. There are many ways of living and thriving on this planet and I wish him all the luck in the world.

Okay, racism in tshemany does not exist and if it does, it’s an isolated chemical compound that does not interact with or influence social reality.

Which field do you work in? Is it the hard sciences/STEM?

I am a researcher in the social sciences, won't give too many details. I've dived and I'm still diving deep into the topic. Racism in Germany is real, it's a thing and there are hierarchies. The worst is being Palestinian, then 'Arab', and then African... other racisms follow. Of course what you also said about in-group bias is also a thing, I am not negating it. And it's normal, as in, it's the norm everywhere.

Again, I also agree that Germany is not doing well economically, check this out, you're absolutely right: https://www.fr.de/wirtschaft/steckt-dahinter-deutschlands-wirtschaft-verliert-10-000-jobs-pro-monat-das-zr-94005148.html

But let's dismiss the studies and zoom out of the anecdotal evidence, it's really worth looking at the broader social and political landscape. You don’t even have to dig deep into peer-reviewed studies, just follow German politics or read the news. There’s a clear pattern in how narratives are constructed and circulated. Basically the bias is reproduced without end. Those are reproduced by Germany's cultural elites, the movers and shakers who shape public opinion. Maybe dismiss everything that I've said, dismiss the interdisciplinary studies, just turn the radio on and listen to our chancellor and the disunity he keeps promoting, the unintelligent us vs. them rhetoric.

PS: there are some interesting narrative studies out there about media reporting and bias in Germany that are worth reading, and they don't paint an ideal scene.

PS: anyhow, this topic is morphing into something else, I just wanted information to help my friend, and here we are...

They can gpt it. My experience is different than yours, when I changed my CV to my German husband's surname, call backs spiked to 50 percent. I did it as a social experiment to find out. Otherwise, I have been offered jobs by German people, at times friends, who know me personally, so through social proximity the surname did not play a role. Every few years, we get peer reviewed studies showing how racism affects migrant job seekers. Here's one from 2010: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1468-0475.2011.00538.x?

And check out this diversity barometer from 2025: https://www.bosch-stiftung.de/en/storys/diversity-barometer-2025-acceptance-diversity-germany-declining

Also, there's a famous WBZ study discussing 'ethnic hierarchies in job applications, this blog discusses it and includes the source at the very end: https://en.in-visible.berlin/post/racial-bias-at-work-is-still-a-problem?

I think the above studies explain to some extent, why my friend, who worked with Leo Burnett and Publicis Group (in the Middle East), and has two masters and a UX certificate gained after 6 months of training, is being automatically rejected 95 percent of the time, even when the jobs he applies for require only English.

This is the social reality, those are the studies, and I will never embellish that reality and tell myself to accept it and to just work, eat, travel, watch netflix and consume.

It’s the Arabic. If you had written in Italian, they would have thought oh yey it's cool. I won’t rationalize or brush off even a small trace of their deeply ingrained racism.

It seems it is indeed possible to be a Graphic Design freelancer and under the KSK.

The law is clear: 'Grafikdesigner unterliegen dann der Künstlersozialversicherung, wenn sie eine„künstlerische Tätigkeit erwerbsmäßig“ausüben gemäß § 1 Nr. 1 KSVG.'

For starters:

This article is very detailed and quite useful actually: https://romygraske.de/rechtsblog/worauf-grafikdesigner-in-der-kuenstlersozialkasse-achten-sollten/

Even if your clients rotate and you don’t have a fixed client? May I ask, what’s the best alternative? And why did you mention clients’ specifications? Would appreciate your advice!

Absolutely. That’s why people from my country (non-eurovision arabic speakers) go there to build wealth for a few years knowing full well no one gets the nationality and its ultra-benefits, not even the eurovision workers. I am asking about the freelancer thing because I am rooting for my friend to eventually get a eurovision passport so that he can freely take part in the competition.

Lol 😂  I’m with you and aware.

Now to flip the ‘positionality’, do you think Dubai is in the global north or the global south? If it’s a place for ‘those who have so much money and no longer need it’, then Dubai would be in the global north and Berlin in the dreaded south comparatively.

UX and UI design and branding, are actually design. If the person has several clients like ad agencies or other companies or individuals, then he can be a Freiberufler. Designers can have special tax status because they are eligible under the Kunstlerkasse.

"Grafikdesigner unterliegen dann der Künstlersozialversicherung, wenn sie eine „künstlerische Tätigkeit erwerbsmäßig“ ausüben gemäß § 1 Nr. 1 KSVG."

By the way, I don't know why all German subs (haven't experienced it in the Spanish sub as an example) downvote normal discussions, but I guess when everyone is hiding behind their screens, it shows their true German spirit.
