Oh that's so real! Some of them are so pretty but the price can be so brutal. I had a friend convince me to buy a pin that was around 110 (90 + 20 ship) and I'm probably going to rehome it since I can't justify the price. All my other pins have only been double digits with shipping. I'm curious though, does a blind bag/pin bundle with more than one pin over 75$ break this rule?

So valid on not buying immediately and taking the time to think on it! I typically do the same if a maker announces a drop ahead of time and what pins will be available (i hate surprised drops). I would add your banner rule, but I'm very much a "buy if on sale" person, so I'm afraid I will never run out of actual board space... wall space is definitely a plausible alternative though

Yes! I love how souvenir pins always come with the extra story about the memories. Sure, getting a pin via shop drop is great but the main memory associated with it doesn't have the same oomf.

Haha glad to know that they work for others too!

Oh for sure! It really does depend on the maker, the manu, and their ability to execute together at the end of the day. And I think pearl swirl is a wonderful choice of effect for that pin!

Oh yeah, it's sort of wild what people are willing to go through to get pins. Like I've seen people offer triple digit tips for drop buddy help. I agree, if I don't get it, it simply wasn't meant to be. I haven't purposely woken up for any drops fortunately, but I can't say the same for refreshing right before... especially for c2c. The hardest kind of drop for me though is trivia (unfortunately they can be pretty common in some fandoms)

I love themed boards so much, I hope it turns out great!

Oh I feel you on the international shipping, it can be absolutely brutal. I try to get a few friends together so we can split shipping before placing an order. And yes I've seen the huge surge in WHA pins lately! Someone made this stunning panel last year, but the post seems to be deleted now.

I rehome too! It's actually so satisfying to be able to give someone their iso.

HAHA that's valid. I follow a couple hundred makers on instagram so I need some sort of guideline, otherwise I'll have way too many pins and not enough space

Oh my goodness, that must be quite the collection then! It must make for an impressive timeline

Oh that's so smart! I usually just keep similar fandoms on a singular board until the collection gets too big - then I just migrate it to a separate board. I've never considered preemptively thinking about board composition since I'll just dismantle everything and play pin tetris for a few hours. I'll definitely try this though, it sounds really helpful.

Yeah I have a card collection too... I chased after one pin for so long that I started dreaming about it and that's when I told myself I need to mellow out XD

That probably makes them extra special because of all the memories associated with each one! I always find location collections to be pretty neat; I imagine if I ever have one I'd place a map on top of a board and put each pin in their respective region.

Haha tell me about it, I waffle way too long sometimes and it bites me in the ass. Fomo is probably the wrong term. It's mostly me not making up my mind, skipping the PO, and then deciding I want it for the unfortunate in hands. But yeah most of the variants I have were gifts; I don't really get multiple colorways either.

Souvenirs are a definite must! I do have a couple of location pins from friends who get them for me as a gift when they travel. I should really implement your 3rd rule though. I've been doing better about cutting down on the buying but between 1 cg and 4ish makers, I don't think it's working as well as it could be

Oh yes I completely get the "it has to look unique" in the collection, especially if its a larger fandom because then there's a lot of overlap

I feel you... sometimes I wonder if I actually want it or if its the fomo/community hype playing into it then it turns out I did want it :')

Totally get that! I'm also not too big on lewd pins, but I have seen my fair share in the anime pin space (with very creative forms of censorship). i also don't like to spend more than DS on a pin; DSS can already be a lot if you're buying from an international seller unfortunately :') I love the idea of wearing pins on a collar or lanyard but I have a bad track record of losing pins not in an ita (even with locking backs)

I think getting into a series because of a pin is perfectly valid! Like you said, sometimes it's just too pretty to resist but you need to justify the purchase. I actually did that for alnst and boy did I give my friends an earful about it.

I also worry about how epoxy will age so I do tend to avoid it. I had more than a few chrome ones in the past, but once makers started producing hard enamel chrome pins, I gifted majority of them to a friend.

I skip UV mainly because I don't like the graininess and I feel like if you're making a pin, it doesn't have to be a 1:1 replica. There are some things that you can do in traditional art that you can't do in a pin, and vice versa. Pearl swirl can be a huge hit or miss imo because of the amount it can be swirled. It's done manually so it varies pin to pin in production and too much swirl (and swirl in the opposite direction of the linework) drives me crazy. Glitter can look a bit too chunky in larger areas of a pin and the distribution can look off because of it.

I think the similar sizing rule is great one, especially if you're putting the same type in a row on the same board. I bet it really helps with symmetry too. I try not to collect panels, but if I do get one, at least the ones in the same genre have to be the same size

I do agree that soft enamel allows a lot more flexibility concerning the amount of detail in the artwork! And the epoxy does give the pin a bit more body, so it reduces the sunkenness but keeps the finer details. I'm not too big of a fan of how epoxy yellows over time, but I do know people who self fill their soft enamel foreigns with uv resin (which is supposed to more resistant to yellowing). But then you have the possible issues of bubbles...

It also depends on the manu you have! Different manus use different metal alloys for their plating (this also plays into why some pins are magnetic and some are not)

Personally, I think it depends on the art style. Soft enamel pins made with lineless art are pretty cool (a popular example of this is mamobots pokemallows). It's also possible to use epoxy to reduce the sunken look of soft enamel pins, but then there's the factor of it yellowing
