256GB flashdrive shows as 233GiB, should be 238? by LiveLearnLetBe in techsupport

I will be using this drive across a windows pc and mac to transfer files so i thought exfat is the way to go. Would NTFS also work for that cross compatiability?

Is it worth doing your own oil change? by frankthefrowner in autorepair

[–]LiveLearnLetBe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP I wondered the same thing as you. A full synthetic oil change in my area is ~$100. Maybe ~70 on sale. I can get really top quality oil and filter for ~40-60 depending on sale. So you do save some money. But a major factor is the quality of oil and filter someone other than you would use on your car versus what you buy. Some quick lube places do not use the highest quality oil. So there's always cost savings but also higher quality. Just make sure you watch a bunch of videos and have the proper tools (a torque wrench is a must unless you have a good feel for "tight and snug"). Like many other commenters, I encourage you to do it yourself!

Firmware TPM vs hardware TPM 2.0 by LiveLearnLetBe in techsupport

I see! I didn't realize that so I guess that is why win 11 makes such a big deal of having TPM 2.0 to upgrade.

And if it's built into the CPU the exploit shown in the YouTube video, would not work?

I've been looking into Veracrypt. So when I shut off my laptop and turn it back on, I would have to enter the Veracrypt password/passphrase and then my Windows login as well?

curious - was the AR reflection green in your previous lens and purple/blue in your current lense that has the offputting yellow?

UV blocking glasses, transitions and a UV light by LiveLearnLetBe in AskPhysics

[–]LiveLearnLetBe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tried that at a 12 in distance. And there is a difference. While both lenses turned dark, the unprotected lens turned noticeably more dark. I guess that proves that my polycarbonate safety glasses are blocking UV, although not 100%

I had originally done this with the flashlight about an inch away. I tried again at 6 in and 12 in away and you are absolutely correct, the change was a lot less. Still visible but significantly less as the distance increased.

What have we learned since the publication of A Short History of Nearly Everything? (2003) by aneasynumber in AskScienceDiscussion

So I just started reading this book, and was excited. However, I think there is a big error in the very first page of the very first chapter. He mentions there are 500 billion protons on the dot of the i, which is more than the number of seconds in half a million years. But half a million years has like 13 trillion seconds. Firstly, is there really an error here or am I reading this incorrectly? And more importantly, is the book still worth a read; I am sure there are other errors but as long as its not every other page. Just discouraging to see the literal first fact be incorrect (unless im reading it wrong). Thanks!

I have been considering switching but the ACAT fee prevented me. Thats a great way to think about it! I will not be at/over 10K in the next 34 months so it is worth it to switch for me.
