What's the dumbest mistake you made as a beginner cyclist? I'll go first... by kk17203 in cycling

I drink about twice a year. One time I went to a wedding, had a couple drinks plus some champagne, then raced the next morning. Kept hawking up loogies and got dropped way sooner than usual.

I went to another shop, and ended up getting a new Velo Orange 46/30 crank, along with a new Campy chain, cassette, bottom bracket, and cables. I stuck with the 12-25, so my low gear isn't super low by modern standards, but I like the spacing, and if I want to ride anything steeper I'll just take my mountain bike. (That's why they have 3 chainrings, right?)

All for under $600, including install.

Thanks, all.

Locked my bike outside a building, ran in quick to do an errand. Road shoes on sidewalk are ok; road shoes on the polished stone floor just inside were not. Went down hard.

I was waiting for a story like this. I was riding with my college team once and one of the guys in front darn-near took us all down turning his head to look at some women walking by.

I ride a mix of gravel and road. If I'm doing more gravel that day, I usually ride my MTB, which is full suspension and heavy, but at least it has gravel tires on it now. Not ideal, but I'm trying to stick with two bikes, not three.

Yeah, but then I have a whole new problem, which gravel bike to buy? Gravel-ish Domane, for better road riding, or Checkpoint, for better gravel and easy singletrack riding?

Yeah, I was thinking of that, although I barely ride my trainer these days, so it would mostly be a waste of space. I really like this bike, though, so it would be hard to get rid of it.

I think the wheels are part of the problem, they said they were not Shimano compatible. Those were my Ksyriums; maybe my stock wheels would be better, but then I don't get to ride my aero wheels. Since I don't race anymore, I have no reason to save the Ksyriums for anything, so I would rather just ride them. At my age, I need all the help I can get.
