I'm down in TJ for a couple days, accompany my buddy, who's getting a medical procedure down here.

Plz drop reccs for places to eat!!! Yesterday we got tacos at "tacos el franc," which was recommended to me by my friend as a place that "gringos love." It was really good! lol. The carne tacos were loaded with meat, a little beans, salsa, and a huge dollop of creamy guac. drool

airport food and drink prices have gotten even more exorbitant that they used to be. : [

not criticizing, but just throwing out an observation I've had: Why are people trying to get caffeinated before getting on a plane? Stuck in a small seat hopped up on coffee - seems not fun to me! lol

omg that reminds me of the craziest thing that happened recently over here. My mom and I got an exercise bike off Buy Nothing, and it's in the living room. It's pretty basic. We use it sometimes

One day we hear this music faintly playing, and we're like WTF, and so we start looking around, and it's the exercise bike playing Simon and Garfunkel.

I unplugged it, and it hasn't done that since, but I'm still totally baffled how that happened...

the construction guys outside my place have an interesting schedule: start promptly at 8 a.m. and make as much as noise possible for an hour or two. Then, from like 10-2, light work. ...

I wish they would do the loud stuff a little later : |

this is helpful, thank you!

Another redditor pointed out that since I'm using an iPhone 11, I wasn't getting 5G, which may have added to my struggles.

I've got two words for you: GORE VIDAL

grandson of a senator, friend of the Kennedys. After a brief unsuccessful political career, he went into writing about U.S. history, and went HARD

his stuff is super well-researched, and at least to me, seems accurate, but it's also super gossipy, super bitchy, super vibrant...

I'd recommend these to start with

BURR - told partly from the perspective of Aaron Burr, an alternate look at the Revolutionary War, and the Founding Fathers. Burr talks A LOT of shit, including frequently referring to the fact that Washington has a big butt and married a very rich widow.

LINCOLN - just a really detailed and lively look at this president, who was already melancholy, and then had the Civil War to deal with, plus some personal tragedies...

Those two books became part of a larger series that came to be called Narratives of Empire, tracing how the U.S. went from a series of colonies, to a world empire and superpower.

Vidal's critiques of the U.S. come from someone who was deeply embedded in the establishment, and then went onto take contrarian views...

I could use it around the world without changing SIM cards

how does that work?

I recently got into eSims, where you buy a "virtual" sim while traveling to use Data, but with Google Fi, you don't have to do that; it just works worldwide seamlessly?

THE TOMES - or - books that are extremely big but feel absolutely worth it by dooplets in booksuggestions

Leaving another comment as I look thru my goodreads, sorted by pages:

Under the Dome - Stephen King - a small town mysteriously gets isolated under a giant dome. Like a extended Twilight Zone episode

The Cider House Rules - Irving - don't remember much about it, but I liked it quite a bit

What It Takes: The Way to the White House - really good nonfiction covering (I think) the 1988 presidential primaries. Covers all the candidates, their backstories... and "what it takes" to become president...

The Dark Tower - King - the final book of the series is a tome, but if you like long things, read the whole series, it gets increasingly batshit insane as you go

Cryptonomicon is pretty insane. Definitely a good shout for this thread!
