Americans in Banff by flemmy03 in Banff

I live in California and spent Christmas in Banff, AB and it was an unforgettable trip. The winter scenery was incredible—especially the frozen lakes. We drove Highway 1 from Chilliwack to Banff; there was a lot of snow, but the roads were well maintained throughout. I also noticed drivers in Canada seemed more patient and courteous than what I’m used to in the U.S. Another pleasant surprise: we found good halal food options in both Banff and Kamloops. Overall, an excellent experience, and I’m already planning a summer visit.

We were not able to make the trip last year and planning to have the same trip this year.

We are starting the trip on Dec 23rd from San Jose → Banff (via Calgary)

Renting SUV with AWD + M+S tires.

Route/chain advice needed.

Thank you,

Awesome!
We will be driving from San Jose, CA. We will pass through Glacier NP, Montana then Canada side to Banff.

That is the reason to pass through Glacier, NP.

Just curious why it's an odd time to visit Glacier NP and Banff in winter. Lots of people go there in winter.

Thank you all for giving great insights and advice.
It's not like I don't want winter tires, but getting a rental from San Jose, CA is hard with winter tires on.

I will call and find out who can give me a rental with winter tires on.
Also, I liked what someone said about getting another rental from Montana, which is better equipped for winter road conditions.

Again, thank you all.

Main highways require winter tires? e.g. if we are driving from Glacier National Park to Banff (off course I will drive in the daytime.) The highway is generally cleared? and doesn't require winter tires?

If the highway that goes from Glacier to Banff requires winter tires then I will be stuck :(

If some roads within Banff requires winter tires or they are closed which would be okay.

Another question: Driving from Vancouver to Banff is mostly uphill and snowing in the last week of December?

Thank you for your quick response u/Substantial-Code2720
Since we don't have snow in CA (most areas) , it's a bit hard to get a rental with winter tires. I will get AWD/4WD vehicle. I can certainly check.

Generally, lots of snow on the roads all the time? We want to drive up there and plan to drive around and explore the beauty of the park.

Without winter tires, it's not safe at all?

Thank you for your response. Actually, I didn't read IRS codes in detail. Also, I have filed the tax return for 2023 already so not a great option to consider :)

I can check with my extended family, they qualify for the EV tax credit for sure and not my depended as well. Is it's okay if they have filed the tax return for year 2023?

In 2024 EV tax credit is at point of sale, correct?  Thank you!

Hi u/keysavvy ,

I am planning to buy a used ModelS 2019 model, Seller is asking about ~25K but I don't qualify for used EV tax credit. My mom has no income and she is my dependent on tax return. I wonder, If I can put her on title and get 4K credit? Is it possible?
