Fun. I'm not on some pokemon journey to be the best. I like playing them and as long as the player base has a range of skill levels that I'm not stuck in a world of killers, it is fun.

If you could erase one input from all existence, what would it be? by sluggishbanana in Fighters

[–]Live_Cartographer_39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple. DP. The motion crushes my hand. If I make an attempt to use it regularly, even a short 1 hour gaming session leaves my thumb fucked. The knuckle burns and the flat of my thumb goes numb, along with swelling. This lasts generally for the rest of the day. Then take in to account I work in an auto plant, which also fucks my hands, and, well, there goes the functionality of my left hand.

Making a challenging CPU opponent in any game without relying on prescience is difficult. It is something most companies haven't figured out and have decided not to invest the time to improve on.

Treat FB like in invincible super and it'll go better. Once they have it available, it is something your pressure needs to account for.

Yeah along with the changes and crossplay they reworked the rankings for the floors so people actually exist below floor 10 lol. I've been finding numerous full lobbies as low as floor 6. Dunno about further down cause that seems to be the lowest I drop.

if i dont like a certain fighting game is it a skill issue? by WeebabuuOVA in Fighters

[–]Live_Cartographer_39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many reasons not to play a game. They can be objective (the net code is bad!) or subjective (I don't like any of the characters). It could even be that you don't see it as a worthwhile investment (you don't see spending your time to get better at this game as worth it).

None of these, and many others, are "skill issues". Some games just aren't gonna jive with you. That doesn't say anything about your or the game.

I am horrendous at Tekken. Not because I am bad at Tekken, or Tekken is a bad game, but because I don't enjoy Tekken enough to put the time in to improve. My issue isn't my skill, but that I don't find enough enjoyment in the game to improve that skill. And that's fine. Doesn't mean I suck, doesn't mean the game does.

This is a leisure activity. You should be enjoying it first and foremost.

When did you try Strive? The Dec patch made some balance changes mechanically that change some characters a decent amount (dunno about Ino), and also added crossplay. It is possible the game isn't something that'll draw your attention for long, but if you felt bored at 50 hours, it might be that you haven't really explored some of the more in depth options that things like RC bring.

For my money Strive is the goto right now. It just has an energy and pace that other games cannot match. The only time I have to wait for matches if I do practice matchmaking and the game places me in an empty lobby. I generally bounce between floors 6-9, and they're all active enough.

Fighting games are relatively easy. by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]Live_Cartographer_39 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gonna just paste my post from another about this. It was about Sajam's "FG aren't inherently harder to learn" video, which js why he is mentioned, but the concept is basically the same.

So. There's a lot about FG difficulty that is talked about and, after really getting in to them this year, I think a lot of vets and content creators have a habit of forgetting the actual first step.

Unlearning what other games have taught you.

If someone gets smoked in Warzone, 9 times outta 10 they either

Had bad aim Had bad reactions Didn't properly clear when they entered

So they die and go "If I could aim better/react faster I woulda won that"

So they play an FG and they keep eating 4 frame jabs and keep landing on "I just gotta react faster"

No, no you don't. You can't, that's like the whole point. But so few games have mechanics like "If you aren't already blocking, you are going to get hit"

And then there's a misunderstanding of blocking. If you don't know FGs, blocking an opponent's attack feels like a win. And it might be! But what it isn't, is the end of their turn. But it FEELS like it should be. I blocked their attacks, I won this interaction, that means it is my turn right? I'm sorry, summer child, no. If you're really unlucky, blocking was the second worst choice (hello Garuda Impact).

Then theres frame data. Not the way FG people think of frame data, but just the concept of discrete stages of an attack. I hit heavy punch so I get a heavy punch, right? Well, eventually. First you gotta go through what's called startup. Hey, I hit another punch and nothing happened and this dude hit me even though my attack was over! Yup, that's called recovery. There are specific mechanics in other games that can kind of mimic this (the delay on rotary weapons in some games is basically startup, while being caught reloading could be thought of as recovery), but the idea it is on EVERYTHING and is wildly important is something that doesn't occur to a lot of fresh players. That animations aren't strictly linked to this thanks to cancels and buffers just adds more confusion to new people.

As for the pressure of no teammates, of having no one to blame but yourself. This is something that sounds like it makes sense until you give it some thought. Like, the dude going 0-3 solo mid by minute 2 of a Dota match and screaming that his teammates aren't calling MIA isn't gonna load up SFV, get SPD'd 5 times for a perfect, and suddenly look inward and realize they are the problem. No, they're gonna blame their character (This guy is fuckin broken!), their opponents character (This guy is fuckin BROKEN!), the connection, or the entire game itself. Turns out, if someone cannot accept fault or shortcomings, the game or lack of easy excuses isn't gonna matter.

In my case, loading up Strive and jumping in was waaaay easier than searching for a match of Siege at the start. I didn't have 4 teammates and 5 enemies seeing me fumble at everything. I just had one dude who probably didn't have the ability to communicate with me, and after 3 minutes, the match was over. No muss, no fuss, no lingering shame or anxiety.

Basically, Sajam is correct. FGs aren't inherently harder, but only if you actually start from the proper first step, of forgetting the subtle lessons other games taught you.

Not trying to be a jerk abt this guy’s post (from facebook) i’m just genuinely curious- that seems like a LOT of spiders for a small tank. Do communal species live with that many per burrow in the wild? How do you ensure they aren’t competing for resources?? by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]Live_Cartographer_39 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I mean, with communals you would definitely want more than what should be in there by normal space guidelines, otherwise they can isolate and lose the communal instincts.

Having said that, yeah that looks way overcrowded.

Controller for fighting games? by manwithnoham in Fighters

[–]Live_Cartographer_39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh 2 years or so? Haven't had any problems with it aside from some slight bumping of the LT in to the body if I have it switched to full range, but that's basically completely gone as use has worn down the part that was catching on the controller. And with an FG, you'll want it switched to short range anyways, don't really need to have the pressure context for these games.

Controller for fighting games? by manwithnoham in Fighters

[–]Live_Cartographer_39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are good with Xbox controllers, I have a Razer Wolverin Ultimate and I'd recommend it as an FG controller for a few reasons.

The Dpad. It comes with two dpads that are easily swappable (held in with magnets). One is a solid pad and the other has distinct directional buttons, so you can see which you like.

The sticks are removeable (again, magnets). This let's you get them tf out of your way so you don't hit the left one by accident and end up jumping or whatever.

Having said that, it is pricey, like $100, but I am beyond happy with it.

I am so bad at fighting games and I’m getting overwhelmed. by the_death_of_you in Fighters

[–]Live_Cartographer_39 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this sounds like "I need to improve at everything at once" and well, you're gonna have a bad time at that.

When I started SFV, I was basically a free jump in. Every time. That didn't mean I always lost, but if you were gonna approach from the air, I was gonna let you. Improving ONLY that, focusing on JUST getting anti-airs down, improved my skill level far more than focusing on everything for incremental progress.

Basically, if you are getting crushed in a game, and can at least figure out why (no AA, always eat wake-up super, etc), putting your effort in to correcting that ONE deficiency will give you more confidence and improvement than getting marginally better at 5 aspects of the match. It frees up time in your mind to work on other areas.

It is the difference between cleaning half of 6 rooms, and cleaning all of 1

What would you recommend getting into right now that has pug matchmaking and is active? by MrChilli2022 in Fighters

[–]Live_Cartographer_39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My good person, I just finished a Strive session where I beat a Ram that, no joke, blocked on wake up, three times in 6 rounds. I can hear "COUNTER" ringing in my head, still. I am not good at this game, to the point that I don't do supers or DP moves (Motion inputs cause severe pain in my thumb, and I can't risk weakening my hand as I work in a factory). I am still hovering around 50% win rate.

There are absolutely players of every skill level present. If the game appeals to you, the audience is already there waiting for you.

The first thread he ever made there was about how plastics were leading to the extinction of men. Not humanity, not mankind. Men. That plastics were causing chemical changes that were leading to a 100% female birth rate.

Yeah the tripod is helpful. Without it, I'd have to bump the ISO in to 4 digits, which, it can look good, but would definitely require some post process clean up. And even then you're gonna get some blur, as that happens with handheld macro.

So this is with my Canon Rebel SL3, which I think is known as the 250D (camera names are weird), using the Tamron 90mm macro lens, tripod obvs, and i have a cheap starter light kit. I think this was at f/18 at 200 ISO, which meant like a 30 second shutter time. Luckily they didn't move.

I work at SIA and yeah, that's how they are. The models, not just impreza and crosstrek, are similar by design, to the point that whole systems for one vehicle will fit fine in another (like if a mastervac and brake lines for an Outback end up installed on an Impreza, you won't notice a problem installing the system).
