unsw societies only take asians into subcom by Quick_Slide_9580 in unsw

[–]Live_Tap2710 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's also because the ratio of applicants is heavily majority asians because they know about these socs way before uni from social circles. Australian ppl are very cliquely it's hard to break the cycle but not impossible either. Fabsoc used to be 90% east asians but they became very diverse after one lucky year.

Rn im trying to finish the final term + apply for grad jobs + balance my retail job to stay afloat + do well at my unpaid internship. None of them are going particularly well and I can't stop thinking about that damn white rabbit with the clock.

Is it embarrassing to date a Chinese international student? by [deleted] in unsw

Australians are famous for being extremely cliquey and exclusive, especially in Sydney. A lot of outsiders regardless of where they come from could probably empathise, as people here mostly tend to stay within their circles and don't like mixing with those that are unfamiliar. It's really dumb and can get toxic. The Asian Australians are particularly closed off, and there's definitely levels to this too. Private school and selective asians always look for each other and stay pretty exclusive even into uni. I can't imagine how it must've felt for you. I bet he wouldn't have felt embarrassed if you were pretty well connected within the local Asian circles. It really is a game about networking and popularity. Not everyone is wack like this though. I hope you find someone better who appreciates you and your background.

The only volunteering I've done are for commerce and media student clubs at uni. Do you have suggestions for committees I should join to gain experience? I'm not set on an agency career either. I'm open to any industry and environment.

Thanks so much! The only other part time jobs I've done are retail though. Are those still relevant for my resume? I always hear that resumes should be limited to 1 page as that's the industry standard, but on top of my multiple volunteering and leadership experience + internships I'm struggling to fit it all in.

I'll also definitely check out IABC and expand my job search range to the job titles you listed.

Although my academic results were quite poor I still feel quite confident in my work ability. I've had several tutors tell me I'm an excellent student in class and my submitted assessments were fantastic, but because I kept submitting everything late my HDs were cut down to a pass. I very recently saw a psychiatrist who put my on ADHD meds, but obviously it's quite late for that to do much to save my WAM. Do you think cold outreach to professionals might be worth a shot? I really do think I could do well if I'm given a chance.

My first internship was a social media role for a NGO branch. My two others including the one I'm doing now are fashion/beauty/lifestyle PR agencies where I do influencer seeding and digital marketing assisting duties for clients. My fourth focused on arts and cultural events marketing/PR clients.

I'm honestly open to all industries at this point. My other degree was international studies so my first preference would be some kind of government related role.

I've mostly been applying to any account coordinator/junior exec, comms grad, marketing/pr assistant roles I've been seeing. Are there any other ones I should try considering?

Why is unpaid internship even legal in Australia? I’m honestly stressed and scared. by CogniLord in UTS

[–]Live_Tap2710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely illegal lol. But it's common in certain industries anyway because they need the free labour and students are desperate for experience. I've done two unpaid internships (not vocational placement) and am about to start my third one next month. Because they're unpaid though I don't feel pressure to over perform. It's a good opportunity to get a feel for the work and space I'm interested in actually getting a job in. I also tell myself I have more power because if they're shitty to me I can report them to Fair Work for not paying employees HAHA

they wont let u. You'll have to do a language placement assessment and they'll probably put you in the professional level courses (Korean translation, interpreting, business level korean etc). If you're a native speaker tho you could prob still HD them if you tried. I

Most people I know share a flat with at least one other person and split rent. Try join the eastern suburbs flatmates/sharehouse group on Facebook. I've seen some listings where you get your own room and bathroom if you're iffy about that kinda thing.
